UG Metal Forum's New Monthly Feature!

Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! He-Shes and Hermaphrodites! You are currently reading a brand new feature to the UG Metal forum.

The idea is, that each month, three volunteers shall each contribute their part to what is essentially an extended 'Band of the Month'.

But just doing a band of the month isn't really all that interesting, so we thought we'd offer a bit extra. The first section will be the atypical band of the month, a band new on the scene who may be of interest to you all. Secondly, will be a 'Lost Relic'. An overlooked jewel thats been lost in Metal's history books brought to attention. And finally theres 'The Essential Guide to...'. An in-depth look at a decorated band that not everyone will have acknowledged.

In future months, some of you can volunteer to do any particular section, with some of these guidelines to submissions....

Quote:
1. Always include a link to the music. It's no good showcasing a band if no-one can bloody hear them.

2. If theres any other sources of info on the band, I recommend linking to them at the end of the submission. Preferably in [URL] tags.

3. Make it flashy. I don't mean silly .gifs scattered everywhere, but it always looks better if you include stuff like album artwork, logos, band pics and using dynamics with titles and texts and the like.

4. Always pass your submission through me via PM. I guess you see me as a quality controller for your submissions.

Onto business, this month's feature is being brought to you by Firenze, MHDrunk and Myself. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Band of the Month - Destinity

Brought to you by Firenze

Formed in France in 1996, Destinity’s style has progressed over the years from Black Metal, to incorporating more Death into their music, and more recently they have changed their style to Melodic Deathrash.

Their latest album, “The Inside” is an aggressive combination of explosive riffs, powerful vocals, and intense drumming. I definitely recommend this band to any fans of Scar Symmetry, Meshuggah, At the Gates, and Slayer. They’ve got catchy, melodic tunes, nice use of keyboard, and not lacking at all in the speed/technicality/precision department.

They also come with an extensive discography, with styles ranging from Black Metal, Symphonic Black, and Blackened Death. My personal album preferences are “The Inside” and “Synthetic Existence” for a more groovy, a bit Deathier feel.

Lost Relic: Electrocution - Inside the Unreal

Brought to you by MHDrunk

Electrocution are an Italian death metal band who released one album - Inside the Unreal - in 1993 and promptly disappeared off the face of the Earth - as if they were ever on it in the first place, with information on them just about impossible to come by.

Their style leans towards brutal thrash metal but is firmly rooted in second wave death metal. This record marries the bonecrushing brutality of the then-fledgling NYDM scene (see Suffocation, Baphomet) with the balls-to-the-wall aggression, speed and chaos of Teutonic/Brazillian thrash, all the while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism and technical proficiency. Listeners should be reminded of such classics as Sepultura's Beneath the Remains, Morbid Saint's Spectrum of Death or Baphomet's The Dead Shall Inherit.

Any fan of death or thrash metal will finish this album with a wet patch between their legs.

The Essential Guide to... Edge of Sanity

Brought to you by Dyer's Eve

Edge of Sanity were formed in 1989 by one Dan Swanö, following the demise of his Crossover band Brejn Dedd. Swanö recruited guitarists Sami Nerberg and Andreas Axelsson, bassist Anders Lindberg and drummer Benny Larsson and recorded their first demo 'Euthanasia'. After the recording of their second demo 'Kur-Nu-Gi-A', they signed to Black Mark Productions, renowned for it's strong bond with Bathory. In January 1991, they recorded their debut album 'Nothing But Death Remains', solidifying them as one of Sweden's more promising Death Metal acts.

There was more tome come from the band though, one year later, their follow-up 'Unorthodox', was already a step into new directions, ushering in more progressive influences in tracks such as 'Enigma' and 'When All is Said', further cementing them as a band with a unique touch and with more to come.

The stream of new releases was seeing no barrier, the following years saw the 1993 release of 'The Spectral Sorrows', notable for it's Dan Seagrave-penned album sleeve and cover of Manowar's 'Blood of My Enemies'. 1994 saw the release of their 'Until Eternity Ends' EP and their full on step into Melodic/Progressive territory with 'Purgatory Afterglow'. Which also heralded Edge of Sanity's first promotional video for 'Black Tears'.

1996 would see their most grand evolution to date, the 40-minute single track epic 'Crimson'. It marked their transition to a full-on Progressive Metal band. With a post-apocalypic concept and guest contributions from a young Mikael Akerfeldt to boot, 'Crimson' became the defining staple of the band's back catalogue.

After the release of Crimson, Dan handed songwriting duties over to Andreas Axelsson for 1997's 'Infernal', where he also took up vocal duties on two of the album's tracks. That same year saw the band record 'Crypic', but this time without Main man Dan Swanö, who was replaced by Pan.Thy.Monium vocalist Robert Karlsson. It also saw the release of their only other official Promo video 'Uncontroll Me'. The touring cylcle for that album was followed by the dissolution of that band's line-up.

Fast-Forward six years to 2003, and an uncontent Dan Swanö revived the name in order to record the sequel to 1996's magnum opus, 'Crimson II'. With some hired help in the Guitar solo and vocal department, the new 44 minute epic was completed and marked the final farewell for the name Edge of Sanity.

Also, in 2006 a 2-disc Greatest hits CD was released entitled 'When All Is Said'. Containing a compilation of tracks voted on by his forum's users. with Disc 2 being edited versions of both Crimsons.

First Purchase - Crimson

While the single 40 minute track is difficult to swallow, this was undoubtedly Edge of Sanity's defining moment. Utilising Dan's vast vocal range to great effect and composing timeless melodies over a backdrop of A-tuned ass-kickery, intertwined with soulful clean passages, this is a must-listen for anyone who considers themselves a fan of Progressive Metal.

Follow-Up Purchase - Purgatory Afterglow

The catchiest album in their repertoire, boasting the single 'Black Tears', as well as barnstorming classics such as 'Of Darksome Origin', 'Elegy' and their statement of intent opener, the melodically driven 'Twilight'. If Crimson is too much to take in, this might just float your boat.

Also Get... - The Spectral Sorrows

Three albums in, and they just kept getting better. Tracks like 'Darkday', 'Jesus Cries' and 'Lost' still indicated they could kick it up a notch, while 'Sacrificed' indicated towards some of the catchiness Dan would later display in his other band 'Nightingale'. Not to mention the infamous cover of 'Blood of My Enemies'.

Hit or Miss... - Crimson II

Personally my favourite EoS release. But with the extensive synth usage and the super-modern production job, It's easy to see why a fan of the earlier work could dismiss it. Either an exercise in self-indulgence or a lesson in songwriting on a grand scale, depending on who you ask.

Avoid... - Cryptic

The album that marked the departure of leading man Dan Swanö, while not a bad album by any means, was definitely an indication of what they were missing without him. Stand out tracks include 'Uncontroll Me' and 'Bleed You Dry'.

Pretty cool, I'd like to get involved in coming months. I'll check check out MHD's band, as I know the other two.

And as soon as I read the first post guessed Dyer's would be doing EOS.

Edit: Listening to Premature Burial by Electrocution - definitely liking it so far. Great atmosphere, good vocals, fast, raw and catchy riffs, they're not afraid to change up the pace and sound, solid drumming and bass (from what I can hear of the bass on this laptop), the lead's alright. I'm gonna be looking into this band further.

Never heard of Destinity, but the songs they have on their myspace aren't very promising. Are the early releases any better?

They can't put download links up because that's illegal without express written permission from the band or their label and UG doesn't like to be associated with anything illegal.

edit: Great idea though. Would love to help out at some point down the line.

I'll reserve Essential Guide To Blind Guardian!

But yeah, this looks nice, though none of bands were new to me on this one

We never discussed anything about reservation, to be honest. I think it's first come first serve...it's really only fair. Especially that Blind Guardian are huge

By the way, credit to the banninated Frog for Destinity
