Sweet lookin, man, thanks for the input. However, as the wood I'm using looks really good, I think I'm going to keep the entire thing natural.

If I do another of the same body type, I will probably do the racing stripes - looks really cool.

===

An update: I have the body blank glued, waiting on my uncle (I've probably already said that). I have cut my cocobolo to length, and sanded it to prep for gluing with the other pieces I'm using in the neck. After figuring out that Jabota is a crappy wood to use for building (warps easy and bad tonal qualities), I went to the lumber yard today and picked myself up a 3' by 5" piece of mahogany for 20 bucks.

My neck will now (and this is final, unless I f*ck up somehow) be Mahogany/Cocobolo/Mahogany.

I am waiting on my uncle to glue and clamp, as he is lending me his clamps so I don't have to spend uber money.

I don't think Naphtha will do a good job at taking out the oils for gluing cocobolo... i'd use acetone instead... I use naphtha for "safe" degreasing before finishing, during finishing and on top of existing finishes because it does a good job and doesn't harm finishes. If i want to prep anything for gluing it's always acetone because it strips the oils out of the gluing surface and dries very quickly.

Just my opinion... it's what works well for me

Naptha will work to remove the oils.

I had to do a two-piece body, so if the glue joint comes out looking like a four letter word starting with s and ending with hit, I'll do that. Only problem is that padauk darkens over time to a real dark brown, so I'd probably go with a creme stripe.

EDIT: Double Post'd. Sorry.

have fun machining that jatoba. i wouldnt let that crap anywhere near my tools, it literally annihilates planer and saw blades. looks real pretty when its finished, but you get the same look with bubinga.

definitely got yourself a challenge for a first build buddy, i cant wait to see it finished though.

I dropped the Jabota from my project after someone pointed out that you have said it warps like a SOB, and that it isn't good tonally. Picked up some Mahogany today to fix that problem

Glad to see you back, by the way.

EDIT: And yeah, it did dull the hell out of my table and mitre saws. Also, I never got back to your PM you sent me ages ago about working with the cocobolo... thanks for that help. Made sure to use a respirator (terminology check, plz) while sanding.

it is okay for a body, but the only time ie ver see people using it is on thin bass bodies, like 1'' thick or so. they told me that once they did the round-over on the sides, they had to get their roundover router bits sharpenned. it does move alot, but for body wings it wont be too bad, and for a bass, people will build basses out of anything and not worry about sound, the electronics of a bass are far superior to those in (most) electric guitars. mahogany will be much easier to work, just keep in mind which way the grain goes. routing it one direction will be perfectly smooth, the other direction will cause tearout like crazy ,depending on the piece.

There will be wood pr0n. I can promise you that

I'm gonna go with the SD Jazz in the neck, and I want to go for the Invader in the bridge just for the blink lulz but I don't know yet.
