The Chess Thread

KING ME!

I know there have to be some other enthusiasts around here. I've played for a while, but only recently had taken up chess as a serious hobby about a year ago. I'm in a club that meets only a couple times a month, but we all have ongoing games via online games.

I'm halfway through working into Edward Lasker's book, Modern Chess Strategy. I also have Chess Traps, Pitfalls & Swindles by Horowitz and Reinfeld, but haven't got into cracking that one open yet. I rely heavily on my knights, so I'm excited for that one.

Who else here is a chess player? The best site I've found for playing with friends on the go is Chess.com. You can sign up with a free account and challenge friends, get free chess tactics and mentor lessons, and stream GM games. It's cool.

If you sign up/have and account, post it and I'll keep it in the OP so we can get a UG Chess group together.

I always start a chess match strong but then I quickly get tired of the posturing and defensive play so I make dumb sacrifices being needlessly aggressive so that something actually happens.

I did that a lot. Something that helped me was trying to force Bishop trades early. If I could get a trade or two out of the way in the first 10 moves or so, then I felt I had more room to operate and I wasn't as stuck worrying about pawn posturing as a preventative but more as a reactive.

ooo I like Chess, too bad I suck at it

Also, I have what I call "The Curse" Which is basically me being able to beat someone again and again in casual games but as soon as I get to a tourny I lose like a mother****er..

Made me so angry and frustrated I stopped playing lol

I searched and saw that one, but it was on the 2nd page of the search, so I figured it'd be safe to start a new one. Sent you a challenge.

I started reevaluating my chess playing last year.

My weakness is probably openings; If my opponent starts with an opening I don't know the game is pretty much a shoe-in for the other player if we're even strength.

But dayum there's ALWAYS that one move the other dude does that I overlooked.

It would also be kind of cool if we can have some sort of UG ranking system but it might be overly complicated and not worth the trouble.

Bishops can make a very effective kill zone, if the rest of your position play is good.

Knights I feel are better closer to the opening and bishops later in the game when they have more freedom. also, mating someone with just a knight and a few pawns is basically impossible compared to a bishop and a few pawns.

A Venetian Attack opening (starting with the knights towards centre) is a great way to control the central rows, but it can be easily buggered by someone who can use his pawns well.

I have an account, but I haven't played in a few months. I'm down for some matches as long as no one minds that I tend to take a long ass time between turns. Just send me a challenge and I'll probably accept it.

Username is redredredredred

I do this so often. I try not to, but it's so hard to resist.
