Anybody know of any good second or third tier bands? And please don't say Reflections.

First Tier - Surface bands anyone can get into and are good starting points for people. Second Tier - Solid bands with consistent material but don't push boundaries. Third Tier - Best of the best who helped mold and pioneer the genre. Or switch it around, but that's the gist of it.

Best ones are Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Vildhjarta, and Textures. Kind of a sad and lonely list.

They're all pretty damn surface level though... which is kinda the problem with Djent it would seem. There is absolutely no depth in the scene at all.
Could maybe add Chimp Spanner to that list? People seem to bum that guy.

I've never been able to get into Chimp Spanner. I like his stuff when I hear it, but it never inspires me to go out and get a hold of his records.

I guess some "mid-tier" djent would be Uneven Structure, Destiny Potato, David Maxim Micic, Akeldama, The Safety Fire, Skyharbor.
Low tier would be Volumes and S_t//r..u-T(u(R*e)s, really most plural bands outside of Monuments. Just go look at the lineup for the UK Tech Festival and you'll have all the djent you need. |

1) I was using that as an example of the idiocy of allowing scales/keys to limit what notes you can play. 2) Your second question was partially the point I was trying to prove. 3) I've found that a lot of "theory legalists" (meaning those who ONLY ever stick to musical theory "rules") end up making dry and rather tasteless music. To adhere to a certain musical theory concept to the degree that it causes you to lose all musical feeling is a rather common mistake among amateur composers who are also "theory buffs". Quote:
But SikTh isn't djent. They inspired a lot of the djent bands, but they broke up before "djent" became a thing.

I take what I said about tesseract back. Just heard the new Nocturnal song again, and the new singer definitely is awesome.

"Grindcore Thrash (crossover) Speed Metal (what I call thrash metal) Heavy Metal" Those four, along with death and black metal and SUCCESSFUL hybridization of subgenres, pretty much accounts for everything that else that might be considered metal music (in that doom metal is melodically very dissimilar from heavy metal, just slower and more meloncholy). I'm not very familiar with the Doors but I can only presume that there is some aspect of their music which ANUS appreciates. Quote:
