Stewart Macdonald Pickups
I was looking at upgrading one or both the pickups on my Ibanez S series. Currently I have the stock pickups, Ibanez "Designed by EMG" passives. I was looking to spend no more than $100, so I was looking at replacing my bridge pickup first with a Seymour Duncan Invader SH-8 for around $80, but then some one told me about Stewart Macdonald pickups, which were apparently excellent value for money pickups, and I good get both neck and bridge replaced for less than $100.
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electro...Humbuckers.html Are they any good, or does any one have any more recommendations? I play medium to high gain stuff, mostly Hard Rock/Thrash/Progressive, as well as a bit of modern rock, blues and alternative. Megadeth, GnR, Hendrix, Velvet Revolver, Led Zeppelin, Pantera, SRV. tl;dr I need to upgrade one or more of my pickups for $100 or less. I play hard rock/metal/progressive. Thanks!

^ That's nice to know, but I just wanted to confirm whether they'll do the job for heavy rock/metal.

Stewmac's pickups wouldn't suit that well (well, maybe as the neck pickup it would) - Look on eBay for used pickups - SD's go for about $40 often.

To narrow it down, I generally use a Slash/Satriani style lead tone and either a GnR/Megadeth rhythm tone.

Try looking online at reviews on what it can do. I would recommend GFS, because they have a larger selection though, and thus some models are edged towards some playing styles.

The stew macs are decent pickups the hotter ones might work better for what you want. I have a set in my epi and the stew macs are better than stock for sure. Just not much selection w the golden age pickups, they are gonna be more oriented toward a vintage sound.

Ok, thanks for your inputs!
I did end up ordering them, the black uncovered overwound ones. I'm trusting the reviews on harmony-central, and hope they're that good. Will post a review ASAP.

IronGear would have been the best choice. Just bad timing, I guess.

Well, I think the IronGear pickups might be a bit more expensive, I can't really spend that much(it's a gift) and I didn't want to just upgrade 1 pickup. May be when I have a bit more cash to spend and if/when I buy a new guitar in a couple of months I'll give the IronGears a good, hard look!
Thanks a lot any way!

Pity as they are £25 each. Still You'll probably like the StewMacs too.

Well honestly... Iron Gear are probably in the same range as Guitar Fetish... maybe slightly better than Stew Mac.
If you want to... at least start at Seymour Duncan or DiMarzio. I'm not suggesting that IG or any of the other brands are bad.. but well... you get what you pay for.

I've heard good things about rockfield pickups.
I have a Seymour Duncan SH-4 in one of my guitars and I think it sounds pretty cool. I like it better than the Michael Kelly PAF-Plus pickups in my MK guitar. |
