Unhappy New amp! 400$ budget, recommendations please! Info inside

I want a new amp for my Epiphone SG-400 with a Seymour Duncan C8 bridge pickup (A Seymour Duncan custom with an Alnico 8) and a Powered by LACE neck pickup.

I want something versatile. I play mainly rock (90's stuff, alice in chains, , pearl jam, tool, rage against the machine, even radiohead, etc), stoner rock, classic rock, hard rock, psychodelic rock. I love to use distortion, fuzz... I don't want to sound metal.

Edit: I also need cleans, I like to play clean too and I like to play trippy stuff, using my phaser + delay + wah, or just my phaser without any distortion.

My budget is around is 400$ tops.

(Some amps I've been looking at: Orange crush PiX35, Orange Micro terror + PPC 108 double stack, marshall micro stack, etc.)

Any recommendations are welcome! I'll go to a music store next week and try the amps posted here.

Note: Need it for small and maybe medium gigs, and home recording!

Chiming in on the orange, I absolutely love mine. I never gave it much thought before I saw one used. It was so cheap I bought it on a whim. Its absolutely fantastic; the tone is incredible and its louder than I'd ever need as a bedroom player. With the stock tube it sounds alright, but for a few bucks you can buy an old tube on eBay and really be amazed. It responds to tube changes very well; for example I put a lower gain 12au7 instead, now at low gain it sounds almost like a tweed amp (much cleaner than before). You still get all the gain you had before, just higher up on the dial. It came with 2 of the 8" speakers, and while they're lacking compared to 12", I found 2 of them to be sufficient. But at the same time I am a bedroom player with no aspirations of gigging, so I don't need too much out of my amp, just great tone.

agree. if you get the older version you'll have some cash left over for a couple of pedals making it a total win.

Thanks. So far I'll try the Peavey Valveking, Jet city 20w.

I think the micro terror wouldn't suit my needs, I heard it's not good with pedals. I'll try the Orange Crush 35LDX, as clean and distortion are different channels.

Any other suggestions?

Randall RM20, Egnater Rebel, Vox AC15 could all be had around budget and are my 3 favorites in that price range. +1 for the Peavey VK too, and don't forget to check out the Classic 30.

Cheaper Oranges are generally a bit weak in their price range. Not horrible, just weaker than stuff like the aforementioned Peaveys and Jet Citys that shine in those prices. People will generally tell you to swap the speaker as fast as possible if you get the VK. Marshall DSL 40 is a fine amp, could fit those hard rock and psychedelic rock tones really well with the right pedals, but is probably out of your budget.

Does Jet city and Peavey VK sound well clean? That's a must have for me. I'd rather have better clean sound than high gain. A nice heavy distortion would cut it for me, without getting metal-y (heavy sounding palm mutes, etc). I like metal but none of my projects are. (Psychodelic rock, stoner rock, and grunge).

Edit: Don't get me wrong though, I want an amp capable of a good distortion, that's a must too, just not metal.

Peavey Classic? That's one fine sounding amp. Throw an OD in there if you need to really hit the amp hard. Some have a solo boost (if not all?). They have tone for days. I wish I had one. It was like my DSL but everything about it was just a little better.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Peavey-Usa-...D281 676279607

just the first listing i found.

If I had this as the house amp at every show I played at I would be one happy clam.

the VK has pretty decent cleans. i don't even remember when i had the jet citys, i had four dud 2212rc's, so i can't comment on that. the 50 i had a really didn't like.

the micro terror takes OD's well. i am going to buy one just to **** around with. its better with a 12" speaker, i tried it with a PPC112 and PPC212OB. its not bad. however, NOT what you are looking for.

i like the classic 30 a lot. i had one a long time ago. i really like the jcm200 dsl401, i have never owned one, but they sound pretty good. they are worth it, but may bust the budget a little bit. IMO it would be worth it to save up a few more bucks.
