stripping and repainting a strat knockoff

I was thinking of totally stripping my yamaha pacifica down to wood and completely repainting it and the pick guard.
1. It feels like a very plasticy guitar and i dont know if id be able to do this, but if it can be down, what would be the best approach (sandpaper, heat, etc)
2. what kind of paint should i use?
this is the exact same guitar i have
