When should we have a new thread? Because what I'm about to post doesn't relate to the 2010 season whatsoever?

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/88685

1. 107% rules is back - interesting, don't think it will make a difference
2. The FIA also confirmed how penalties will be handed out if drivers do not use both tyres of dry weather tyres during races.

"If the race is suspended and cannot be re-started, thirty seconds will be added to the elapsed time of any driver who was unable to use both specifications of dry-weather tyre during the race," stated the regulations. "However, any driver who completes the race without using both specifications of dry-weather tyre will be excluded from the race results."

What is this?

We knew you had to use both sets anyway - so noone is going to not use both sets. However with the race ending early? What about Kobayashi going to the last lap and pitting and then making up lots on very fresh tyres late on? If the race got suspended and didn't restart just before that he would have 30 seconds added to his time?

Is that to try and even out the results to what they would be if he had made a pitstop? Doesn't seem fair - especially if it's a short and ergo fast pitlane which only adds say 20 seconds to your time. Which is the case in many places?

Seems like a rule that will rarely come into play - but also seems poorly thought out and could potentially cause uproar if it dramatically affects the outcome of a race...

107% rule could cause problems for HRT, if they make the grid. Can't see their car being much better than this year's one, if they build one.

And agree. What a stupid rule for the suspended race. It will just force drivers to pit early. Thankfully, it won't come into play too much.

Is it 107% of the pole lap? If so, I'll blast through the season and work out if they would've been excluded at all.

according to wiki - On June 23, a meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council determined that the 107% rule will be reintroduced for the 2011 season. The rule will be based on 107% of the fastest time set in the first of the three qualifying sessions for each race

So it's the fastest time in Q1.

2010 Season

Bahrain

Q1 fastest = 114.612 seconds. 107% = 122.635
Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok exceed this.

Australia

Q1 fastest = 84.774 seconds. 107% = 90.708
No one exceeds this.

Malaysia

Q1 fastest = 106.283 seconds, 107% = 113.723
Karun Chandhok, Bruno Senna, Lucas Di Grassi exceed this.

China

Q1 fastest = 95.641 seconds, 107% = 102.336
No one exceeds this.

Spain

Q1 fastest = 81.412 seconds, 107% = 87.111
Bruno Senna exceeds this.

Monaco

Q1 fastest = 74.757, 107% = 79.990
An interesting situation - Alonso sets no time. Surely it wouldn't be fair to exclude someone with a time over 107% but include someone with no time?

Turkey

Q1 fastest = 87.067, 107% = 93.162
No one exceeds this.

Canada

75.889, 107%= 81.201
Karun Chandhok exceeds this

Valencia (European)

98.132, 107% = 105.001
No one.

Britain

90.841, 107% = 97.200
No one.

Germany

74.808, 107% = 80.045
Lucas Di Grassi no time

Hungary

80.417, 107% = 86.046
Bruno Senna and Sakon Yamamoto exceed this

Belgium

114.826, 107% = 122.864
Bruno Senna, Sakon Yamamoto, Pedro De La Rosa, Lucas Di Grassi exceed this
Vitaly Petrov no time

Italy

82.421, 107% = 88.191
No one.

Singapore

106.541, 107% = 113.999
Bruno Senna exceeds this
Felipe Massa no time

Japan

92.035, 107% = 98.477
No one

Korea

97.113, 107% = 103.911
No one

Brazil

78.987, 107% = 84.516
No one

Abby Dabby

100.170, 107% = 107.182
No one

People excluded

Bruno Senna x6
Karun Chandhok x3
Lucas Di Grassi x2
Sakon Yamamoto x2
Pedro De La Rosa x1

People with no times

Fernando Alonso
Lucas Di Grassi
Vitaly Petrov
Felipe Massa

So the 107% rule would've applied 14 times. But the interesting no time flaw appears 4 times.

I'm intrigued as how they decide what to do? Because clearly Alonso, Petrov and Massa would've likely set times within the 107% rule, Di Grassi may not have though. What do they do?

^ Before, when the 107% rule was around, they just used practice times when someone crashed in quali to see. I'd be surprised if they don't do that this time around too.

Gives a good reason for the lower teams to try for a decent lap time in practise sessions. Thanks for clearing that one up

I think the idea of the two-types-of-tyre-30-second-rule is probably to scare teams into pitting twice to spice the strategy up. If they're worried the race may end at half way (2009 Malaysia, for example), they'll put on a dry set of tyres thinking that at least they won't get a penalty. It'd be better for them to have a 2nd pit stop of ~25s and fresh tyres than risk a sudden downpour/massive crash and be stuck with a 30s penalty which could easily be added on at a very precarious point, i.e, the lap after the SC goes in.

And yeah, let's get a new thread! 196 pages is enough.
