^ man, you need to get some real monitors! When I bought my AV40s the guy was telling me that the 30s are basically fancy computer speakers and not flat response at all.

For what they are, they sound pretty good. It was one of those situations where it was invest in monitors or buy a video game or something stupid like that ($100 gift card at Best Buy, what else ya gonna do?). Besides, it beats the crap out of mixing with my gaming headset.

At the moment this is where I'm at. Looking at upgrading a lot of stuff once money starts treating me nicely.

Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop (not exactly great for recording but it does the job :/)
Lexicon Lambda
Tascam DP-01FX (never gets used these days...)

Mics:
AKG C1000s x2 (decent enough but looking to upgrade to some sweet Nt5s )
T-Bone Dynamic Mic

Software:
Cubase LE4
Audacity (again, hardly used now)

Gear Wishlist:
003 Rack+Factory (sat my ProTools 101 course so get 40% hardware! )
ProTools LE8
Rode Nt2-A (for acoustic recording/ambient miking)
Rode Nt5 stereo pair (acoustic guitar/drum overheads)
Shure SM57 (guitar amp/snare/general workhorse)
Kick mic (used this Beyerdynamic one at college and it was awesome. Sure it was meant to be a vocal mic though but had a presence peak in the 100Hz range)
MIDI Keyboard
Monitors

At the moment my gear is still kinda really lame because I have no money, so I've learned all my gear knowledge from helping friends pick out gear and record with it but here's what I've got:

Hardware:
DigiTech BP355
Plantronics GameCom 780 headset
some crappy PC speakers I saved from going into a dumpster.
Behringer C1u (well, technically not until after I get paid for my gig tonight but close enough)

I'm completely re-doing all my software right now in an effort to remove all the pirated software I used to frequently use and one piece I still did. So here's what I've got at the moment:
REAPER, discounted licence
AcmeBarGig Headcase (donated to me by Ken, first thing on my shopping list once I sort out my own online payment)
All LePou plugins
Reaper's default plugins
Kjaerhus Classic (I probably spelled it wrong but whatever)
Misc Variety of Sound plugins.

Impulses:
Catharsis
'Sperimental Pack
RedWirez Free
GuitarHacks
some random Bass ones I found on Ultimate Metal

I also have Erkan's Organized Samples from Ultimate Metal. It took me a while to map them out with ReaSamplOMatic5000 (and I haven't even done them all yet, just doing them as needed) but they sound as good/better than what I was using, so I can't wait to do a new mix with these for drums.

I think a lot of local bands would benefit from going to one of these people's home studios instead of going to a super expensive studio in a big city.
It would cost less and...To be honest, sound better.

You're missing something important. Studios aren't all about the gear they have. You're paying for the expertise and experience of the person that uses that gear, too.

If you haven't already bought them, I advise against the KRKs as they aren't as neutral as other monitors in its price range. They tend to have hyped low end on them.

Look into the Equator D5s or the Behringer Truth 1030As as these both are a more neutral speakers and around the same price. The Equators are highly recommended as the best budget monitors out there and the Behringer Truth line is the one thing Behringer has gotten right over the years.
