Line 6 Spider 112 "Red Face" 50W amp
Hey all, I've been looking to buy an amp for a looooooong time (I play a 15W Crate GX-15R amp that sucks! No tone whatsoever) and I recently stumbled upon this on craigslist.
Genres I play are Metal, Prog, Death Metal, etc, basically anything heavy. I do occasionally play rock and punk. I have an Ibanez RG350DX that I usually run through a Boss Metal Zone Pedal, but I figure this amp will give enough distortion. Basically, I'm just looking for opinions on this amp just to see if it's remotely close to what I'm looking for.

No.
Why dont you take a look at the last thread you made about an amp? Peavey 6505 would be fine. If you want "tone" then your not going to get it with a Spider.

Pretty much no, the Spider series hasn't really improved overtime and iirc the red face was on the first series.

This was a different question. That is why I'm not looking at a thread I made four months ago. Also, I'm not looking to spend a ridiculous amount of money.

Don't listen to the anti spider folks here. Go to your music store and play a spider valve and then compare it to the comparable peavey. I went into the sound room at guitar center and was blown away from the valve. It's not solid state sounds digital mumbo jumob, its tubed and sounds great.
If you were to get just a normal solid state spider, I agree with them, it sounds horrible.

I wasn't bashing the Spider Valve was I ?I was steering him away from the digital bullshit that sounds miserable. He said he's not looking to spend a ton of money either, so its not like he could afford a Spider Valve. Which is why I suggested the Vypyr, because the Vypyr isn't over the top ridiculous. But that's just me ![]()

First off, SS=/=Digital. Second, SS spider=/=SV. Third, I prefer Peavey Transtubes to any spider series amp, valve or not. Peavey tube amps KILL them for the most part. A 6505 212 used is about $600-700, same range as a new SV 112. a 6505+ 112 is $600 brand new. fourth, what the heck is your max price?

The red face models i actually quite like, i've used them extensively in practises at uni and it gives a wide plethora of sounds. Ok it wont recreate the qualities of a tube amps, but it still sounds pretty good. Try it out man, for that money it can't hurt to just give it test and see if you personally like it.

Thanks for the advice! Exactly the kind of opinion I was looking for! However, the rest of this thread has turned completely in the wrong direction... All I asked was if it would give good tone and suit metal music.

You can probably get a better tone from the Crate GX then from the Spider or the Metal Zone. That said for $150, it's a decent practice amp.

And pretty much everyone told you no... If you posted a thread expecting a "certain" opinion from people, why the **** post in the first place when you know what you're going to do? Most people said the solid state spiders suck, and they do, compared to other amps in the price range. |

To be fair, this particular model is really quite different to the notorious Spider 2's and 3's, its far easier to coax a better sound from it that the later issues. But as i say, it's a serious try before buy sort of situation, it may not be for everyone.

Except, his actually stated advantages and drawbacks, while others just bashed it and offered another amp for me to buy, which, as I said, was not the point of this thread. I am not looking for other amps that I can buy, I am looking to see if this amp is something I would want.

So if we tell you no, it's not a good amp (which we did), you're just not going to get an amp, at all? You obviously want something else. What you're saying makes no sense.

You were impressed by the stock patches on a Spider Valve? Your credibility just dropped to zero.

So you weren't looking for people's opinions at all, you were looking for validation of a pre-formed opinion you already had.. You are wasting your time and money looking at Spiders for ANYTHING except a practise amp, and even then there are better amps for that.. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of FACT spiders (excluding the valve) are terrible. I played a gig yesterday and 4 of the other bands were using Spider half stacks and they sounded like a buzzsaw, and not in a good way.. Last edited by AxSilentxLine : 02-03-2013 at 07:44 PM. |
