Interesting Miking Problem
I've always had problems with recording my Silverface Champ when I crank it. I close mike the hell out of my Valveking and that's all I ever need but with the champ turned up to about 8 it sounds like a whoopee cushion. It sounds OK on clean close miked but I've always found I do a lot better with a mic placed a few feet back and one right against the cone turned way down.
Today I draped an SM57 in front of the amp and rested one on my guitar case a few feet away and I got a pretty decent sound. Not quite what I want, but not a whoopee cushion. Does anyone have any idea what's going on with this? Is it my speaker breaking up? I've seen people close mic champs and get great sound but I just can't.

you are probably getting a lot of noise from the sound bouncing off walls. You might build a box to put the amp in to record.

I doubt it's reflection from the walls. I record everything in the same room and none of my other amps have this problem.

I've tried both. Off axis I get a little less of the sound but on it's terrible.

Uploading a clip right now. It'll be up in my profile in about 5 minutes.
Edit. It's up now

Okay thanks, I guess I'll try to back off on the pre a little. See if that helps clear it up to my ears. Thanks for the help!
