Skogen - Swedish atmospheric black metal

Haven't made a thread on anything in a while, so figured I may as well break the drought.

Skogen. riding on the wake that made early works of Drudkh, Walknut, Primordial and Agalloch so good, released their debut album Vittra, adding another stellar release to the already bursting ranks of 2009. Measured, paced riffs with clear, open leadwork and cold atmospheres of the Scandinavian shores. They are not breaking new ground, they just play the music they love very well.

As simple as it sounds at first, the album takes several listens to absorb. Gets better with every listen though.

They sound really good. I hadn't actually heard of them before.

Ill download the album, and give it a proper listen, but if those songs on youtube are anything to go by, it wont be long before I buy it.

Emenius, you made me a fan of this band by your description of them alone. They sound pretty good, I'm definitely gonna check them out further.

Anything Emenius recs/likes is probably good.

I shall be checking this out once I'm done listening to the new Negura Bunget for the second time.

I guess I'll be the first to say that it didn't catch my attention upon either listen. I'm fine with the occasional "sonic wallpaper" band like Drudkh, but really, the songs never took flight.

Having now given the album a listen, i feel that though its good, that a few of the songs feel a bit empty. I think they could have done more with them. But I think there is definitely potential there.

^yeah, they still have some way to go in developing their music, but for a debut it's quite a good effort
