Supuration / S.U.P.
French progressive death/doom band that slowly dropped the death metal elements in it's evolution. Their first album, The Cube (a concept album about bizarre hallucinations experienced by someone before they die) is great. I can't think of any band that sounds quite like them. Lots of atypical riffs and leads.

Oh nice, you're still alive. This sounds intriguing, I'll check it out soon.

You're safe on UG.
...unless the mods get you... Alright, I just listened to a couple tracks on youtube. I wish I had more to say, but all I can seem to come up with "yeah, I just listened to two tracks on youtube". Like, the music should be poppy as fuck, but the songwriting... isn't? The guitar tone says Britney Spears, but everything else says deathdoom (I think). I'm not sure what to make of this yet. Either it's a grower, or it's awful.

I heard this years ago and didn't know what to think of it.
I heard it last month and still didn't know what to make of it. Really, this music is so confusing. On one hand, I'm waiting for something to happen. On the other hand, I feel like I should be turned off by their soft progressive tone, but I'm not. It's as if the music is there, but it's neither making me feel positively or negatively about it.

I are confused. The pop tendencies really throw me off but underneath, the instrumentals is quite hypnotic.
Edit: Realised where I was going wrong. Was listening to their later stuff instead of The Cube. The clean vocals suits it better than their later tracks I've listened.

Yes, their music is strange and takes time to adjust to. I really didn't like them when I first heard some of their songs, but when I listened to The Cube all the way through, it clicked. Also, most of their albums are concept albums so listening to individual songs out of context can make them appear even stranger.
Also, albums under the Supuration label have greater emphasis on the band's metal components, while the SUP albums emphasize the other aspects of the band's sound. |

Is the SUP material worth looking into? It might be easier for me to enjoy The Cube if I listen to the not-so-metal aspects of this group.

Anomaly through Chronophobia are worth checking out. Of those, Room Seven probably has the least metal elements. |

I just ordered the Cube and the Still in the Sphere EP, so I'll be in the process of forming a solid opinion here shortly. I relistened to a few songs on youtube and found that I enjoyed them (or at least, understood them) much more this time around.

New material coming:

http://www.deathmetal.org/news/supu...on-february-25/ Teaser Track: Consummate Seems like a mixture of ideas from The Cube and some of their mid-stuff, but in a new context. I have mixed feelings, but it's something to look forward to. |
