I'm gonna look into that, seen it come up a couple of times. What's a good summary of Baudrillard's whole schtick?

ya the hyperreal and all that madness is disturbing. inhabiting a false reality that is not actually false at all.

Baudrillard, along with some other postmodernists, were way too eager about the 'postmodern condition' tho, to the point where it just seemed that they could only view late capitalism as a good thing

hyperreality is basically self-destroying if you follow it too far.

Basically, nothing is real because something will eventually try to copy it. The copy will eventually become more real than the real thing since the copy will eventually have no referent. Nothing is real because a new simulacra replaces the previous one if it gets broken. It's fun to play with but gets ridiculous quickly.

... and the literature/good book thread died the end

I learned yesterday that the untranslated name of The Death of the Author--La mort de l'auteur or something--is a pun related to Thomas Malory's La Morte d'Arthur. Which makes sense given the central ideas in Barthes' essay and the multiple authors in Malory's work.

I ought to read the wikipedia articles for these things

stickied, too.

---
edit: A professor of mine explained hyperreality in terms of porn addiction. It's more "real" than the real thing and thus replaces it.

I think it goes deeper than that (hue). You wouldn't even need a porn addiction. It's like what is considered "normal" sex by many teenagers who watch porn. That's the beginning of the hyperreal.

Yea, I guess I noticed the Malory reference but didn't think much of it because French. It all looks like that to me.

That's a good point and I agree. First it's porn and then everyone all of a sudden furries and vore are perfectly normal (or, not kidding around so much, all kinds of horrible stuff--though some kinds of neat stuff, I suppose).

The concept as a whole is very compelling, but it also seems like it's so open-ended as to explain anything but predict little.

(but there goes me interjecting concerns about falsifiability and all that)

I'll look into him, but this sounds way too dense to be helpful to me haha.

By the way, Steve, have you played The Last Of Us? Cuz I half made this thread to talk about that game.

Media. Theory. Philosophy! You'd like it. Basically, since people complain in game/film/TV/literature threads about theory talk, I figure we deserve a room of our own.

I made it mostly to discuss narrative semiotics in those mediums, although I probably will enjoy theory whenever I start to get it.

I'm gonna hunt that book down now, sounds pretty cool. I've been thinking about how you could approach prose written by a character ever since House of Leaves.
