Help me find a 5 string
I currently own a peavy Jump starter pack bass that was a hand me down from my younger sister. I need to upgrade!
Willing to spend between 3-5 hunredd, will push to 6 if its worth it. Styles:I play mostly metal (all types) and a little reggae, wanting to get into playing blues and jazz |

I have nothing but praise for the Squier Affinity 5 I bought for £210 last year bearing in mind I've owned some top basses. The one upgrade was a John East J-Retro active kit which can be fitted in less than 1/2 hour.

Ibanez BTB 405's or 455's.
They will be the Basses you always come back to, as many costing thousands more will only be marginally better in Tone, fundamentals, and structure.

^This. Or you could check out the Squier VM Jazz 5-String. It's only $330ish new (or $250ish used) and it sounds amazing for the price. However, there are different opinions on it. So if you can, try out the Ibanez's that Sliide suggested and the Squier VM Jazz V |

Highly recommend the SR505. Had mine for about a year and I still smile everytime I see it. Might be a little out of the price range you mentioned though.

ill def check out the 505s. If they are pretty good quality id be willing to go a bit over my price range.
I see that on musicians friends they offer the 505 with both a rosewood and a maple fretboad. I'm not very knowledgable on woods. Are there any major diff. between the two or is the color the major difference? |

I prefer Maple, becuase they feel better to me, you don't have to look after it (rosewood fretboards require some lemon oil rub every once in a while), and looks better. The feel and sound difference are arguable. Still, i notice a huge difference in feel, and some little difference in sound. if you don't know which one you prefer, and you won't try before buy, just pick the one that looks better for you. It's not a huge difference. I mean, i prefer maple, but most of the instruments I've had, had rosewood fingerboards...

So I've narrowed it down to a few basses
Ibanez SR605 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass...580529000001000 Ibanez SR805 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass...g-electric-bass And then I've also stumbled upon a few different basses. Ibanez agb200 hollowedv body http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass...ric-bass-guitar I hope to learn to do a little bass, but this doesn't seem to be meant for that, nor for metal. But it's so damn beautiful and classy http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass...lamed-maple-top This ESP 8 string looked really cool too. |
