A 2005 Ibanez SR1006EFM from the Soundgear Prestige line

Saw this bad mofo for 350£ on craiglist (1200£ new) and haggled it down to 300£ including shipping and case!

Plays like a dream and has a sound to match! Great to own a fretted bass again after a few years of playing fretless exclusively

Realize that this bass is from a time, where Ibanez' Prestige basses weren't made exclusively in Japan (like many, including myself until recently, often presume). This bass is made in Korea, BUT that has absolutely no significance on the quality of the instrument. Let me tell you that this bass is the product of amazing craftsmanship and I couldn't have cared less if this was crafted in Korea or Japan (except maybe in resale value - MiJ has a certain "prestige" to it's name - no pun intended ). I won't get more into that discussion, but the point is that: Ibanez Prestiges will be Ibanez Prestiges, no matter where they are crafted.

Before getting into the bass itself, let me start by saying, that since I bought this beauty on such a whim, I haven't had the chance to A/B and compare it to other similar basses, so I will talk out from my general experience about the bass compared to other similar instruments I've played

Now let's look into this axe's specs:

SR6 Prestige neck-thru. 5pc. maple/ bubinga neck material. 24/medium frets. Rosewood finger board. 34" scale
First thing you notice when you play this bass, is how fast and slim the neck is. Honestly, I expected the transition to 6-string playing to be harder (judging from some of the other 6ers I've played before), but the neck is very comfortable to play, whether it is brutal 16th-riffing on the B-string or jazz-improvisation in the high registers. One thing to note is, however, that because of the tight string spacing (as compared to the BTB basses for instance), slapping becomes less of a walk in the park. But fret not (was that another bad pun? ), is still very doable, but other basses will still win out on this point. Who buys a 6-stringed Ibanez-monster if they want a funk-slap-bass anyways?
The neckthrough offers amazing high-fret playability and excellent sustain. Smack a bit of compression on this baby and your notes will be able to sing out for a long (!) time.
The 34" is the perfect balance of comfort and sound to me. The B-string can get a tiny bit floppy and some people will definitely prefer 35"+ scale basses, like the BTB, because of this, but I am very satisfied with the tightness, punch and clarity of the SR.

Maple w/ flamed maple top body
One word: Beautiful. Bright and filled with contrasts between the gorgeous flame maple top and the reflective abalone against the dark chrome hardware, pickups and rosewood fretboard.
The wood is definitely good quality and offers a bright, transparent sound.
It is not a light bass (4,5kg ~ around 10lbs), but that's what to expect of big 6-stringers and I don't think it's so heavy that it would be problematic during gigs.

Mono- Rail IV bridge. Easy to adjust intonation and action on. Acts as 6 small bridges, offering full isolation of each string and good tone as compared to cheaper alternatives. Together with the Gotoh tuners, they hold the bass in tune extremely well.

Aha! One of my favorite features of this bass is the electronics!
Knob-layout: 1 volume, 1 blend, 1 stacked knob with high EQ and low EQ, 1 stacked knob with mid EQ gain and mid EQ sweep (!). All knobs except volume and mid-sweep have a "click" in the middle, so you always know where your "neutral" position is.

The USA made Bartolini's (Not to be mistaken with MK1's!) are really shining in this bass. They deliver best clarity and punch I've seen in all the basses I've played.
The Vari-Mid EQ is something I still hasn't fully explored. It seems to deliver a myriad of tonal options with the 3 band of equalization. I am especially intrigued by the mid EQ, as it is, given the adjustable frequency, parametric! You can dial in that extra lo-mid for your punch or that hi-mid that makes your lead stand out in the mix! I am very happy with the EQ and pickups so far as I never run out of new sounds!
Some people could probably do with a switch to turn the EQ on/off, but I am very content with the sound of the preamp and the punch I can get, so I can't imagine I would ever use a passive mode.

Abalone offset dot inlay.
Not much to say here. Looks subtle but stylish. I like the look of abalone compared to MoP, etc, so I'm very content.

Dark chrome hardware. The chrome hardware looks pretty great, but as with all hardware with this finish, it wears down and gets that spotty look after a while. It's only something you notice on closer inspection though. I could see myself putting gold hardware on this one (like the SR5006 model!), but that's purely subjective.
Nice, sturdy strap-button that will probably be replaced with locks sometime.

The hardcase is as good quality as the bass! Molded perfectly and very sturdy.

I think that covers the most of what I have gathered from this bass during the few days I've owned it!

Took a swing at Tool's Schism with it:
The sound quality doesn't do it justice.
