Explain the Subgenres to me?

I have liked metal for awhile, but one thing I have never fully grasped was how to explain what bands are in each subgenre. I can hear a band and probably tell you what genre they belong in but I couldn't really explain why. I know it is based on the style of the music but some styles sound similar to me. I am also pretty sure that some bands would be in more than one subgenre right?

The main subgenres I don't understand how to describe and/or differentiate between are: metalcore, deathcore, grindcore, and thrash. I don't listen to many bands from these subgenres (mostly power and folk metal) so that is probably why I don't fully understand what they mean. Thanks.

There are good Wikipedia entries for just about every subgenre that has a name.

metalcore and deathcore don't need understanding, they are best avoided altogether

grindcore is more punk than metal, but definitely worth you listening to it.

i don't understand how someone wouldn't understand what thrash is

Metalcore isn't actually metal; it's just that the shitty-ass '00s mainstream metal bands got labeled "Metalcore" because the media's dumb. Deathcore, in theory is supposed to be a blend of hardcore and Death Metal. In practice, there's more bad Deathcore bands (that chug on strings forever) than good ones. Grindcore is a mix of hardcore ideals with "grind-y", low-tuned guitars.

Thrash is...sort of self-explanatory...
