I've actually never listened to Morbid Angel, even in my death metal days, I'll check 'em out. I used to be a huge Nile fan, so maybe something with progressive approaches at a Nile speed. That sounds juicy.
Blessed Are the Sick is definitive of the term "progressive death metal", and is not as fast as Nile, nor as consistently so, but consequently, has far more interesting guitar work, attention to detail and horizontal continuity between phrases, and a wider range of moods expressed as a result-- highly recommended. I would say that one album eclipses the entirety of Nile's discography in terms of artistic/historical significance, actually. Read the lyrics, too, so that the narrative present makes itself more evident. Altars of Madness by the same band is also within the absolute top tier of quality in extreme metal, and in terms of sheer furious, unrelenting riffage, is the better of the two-- however, it does not display utter consistency throughout songs, nor does it attempt to give life to an abstract concept as on Blessed. Still, a stunning work. Also highly recommended.

I back this post, and also posit Helstar - Nosferatu in addition. However, Arghoslent are, for lack of more effective wordsmithing, racist as SHIT so don't listen if that means anything to you. Helstar on that album (haven't listened to the others) are basically progressive speed metal or something, really epic, technical, intensely composed stuff. Basically if Yngwie Malmsteen wrote good metal music instead of writing tunes to show off his lead guitar vocabulary, so definitely check that album out.

The correct answer is Edge of Sanity (unless you already know of them). If you do not, try Purgatory Afterglow, Crimson, or Crimson II.

Ikuinen Kaamos might work too, try The Forlorn, and Closure.

Persefone-Core, or Shin-Ken

In Vain-The Latter Rain

In Mourning-Shrouded Divine

Barren Earth-Curse of the Red River

Also give Green Carnation a try, Light of Day, Day of Darkness.

I win, trust me.

You have to ease it in guys (like a penis with a virgin). If you just say, "Listen to Burzum, Morbid Angel, and Gorguts now because they're the best music everrr!!! Otherwise, you're poseur gay!!!" I suggest starting here, but don't forgot about the other recommendations because they posted some ace stuff. I definitely back the Arghoslent rec, and raise a Coroner-No More Color in response.

I can't believe I forgot Edge of Sanity, though I haven't listened to them in years... so that probably accounts for that, actually, haha. As far as nailing the Opethian ideal your list is by far the best of those posted so far, I would think.

I used to be really into that style awhile ago, and some of those are still pretty good to go back to and give the occasional spin.

I'm throwing in Primordial-To The Nameless Dead also because I've been listening to Primordial pretty much no stop everyday for the past two weeks.

I also third Ne Obliviscaris, and second Cormorant.

Kinda late, but:

Elder - Dead Roots Stirring
Cormorant - Dwellings
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - Blood Lust
Weapon - From the Devil's Tomb
Dodecahedron - s/t
Asphyx - Deathhammer
Chapel - Satan's Rock 'n' Roll
Pharaoh - Bury the Light
Dawnbringer - Into the Lair of the Sun God
Hammers of Misfortune - 17th Street
Ludicra - The Tenant
Samothrace - Reverence to Stone
The Secret - Agnus Dei
Young Hunter - Stone Tools

I like stuff like Akercocke, Opeth, Augury, Devin Townsend, Wintersun, stuff like that. I tried a few of the groups from the Extreme Prog section, but a lot of them didn't really tickle me.

Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor.

What are the best DM albums released this year? I don't think I've listened to a single 2012 album.

I was thinking this the other day, other than Rattenfńnger who I just mentioned in the DM thread (and technically haven't listened to yet as the album is still in the post), Impiety's Ravage & Conquer and the re-issue of Electrocutions Inside the Unreal (which doesn't count), I've not bought/listened to any 2012 death metal.

Pretty much all the notable 2012 death metal for me has been death/doom or funeral.

Aldebaran- Embracing the Lightless Depths
Bell Witch- Longing
Inverloch- Dusk | Subside
