Chromatics are fine. It also increases your overall speed a ton.

That guy from the original forum that said to practice it slow for 1 hour, I don't know how my hand/wrist would handle that. i can barely do half and hour.

alright its day 3 of the experiment for me. just a question, even though i'm learning the song at ridiculously slow speed right now, i still tend to make a few mistakes here and there. i have a feeling its due to some bad habits i have formed over the past few months from impatience and bad practice.
should i carry on learning at this pace and perhaps the bad habits would eventually be corrected? or should i be trying something else to correct the bad habits? |

No it doesn't, all it does is increase your speed at playing chromatics. We play the guitar to make music, not do exercises - the 21 day method is an exercise in discipline and the end result is to be able to play your chosen piece perfectly at the correct speed. There's absolutely no point doing it with chromatics because you're not going to achieve anything useful.

+1, You're only used to the 4 note per string pattern that way and you will have trouble with 3 note ones if you're not really proficient at it.

I did something similar to the 21 day idea (I took a month) for learning Symphony of Destruction.
To my surprise, now I can play that solo pretty well, which was nearly impossible to me before. I'll try 21 days with Megadeth's Tornado of Souls

I'll try Battery :P
So basically all I do is practice the song 20 BPM slower than it is, then after 21 days of practising, I speed up to normal speed? |

If you already can play the song in the normal tempo then yes. But if you cant you must find the tempo where you can play the song and then do -20bpm and practice at that speed. Lets say your song is 150bpm and you can play the song at 120 bpm then you practice it at 100bpm in 21 days. Thats how i understood it and thats how i am doing. |

Ok, should do me a world of good. I can do the Battery riff okay at full speed, but can be sloppy, this should be fun. I might also try this with the Trooper solo, I need to patch up some parts of that. |

It's been 3 days of 30 minutes a day and I now play Snow subconsciously without even thinking about it. Almost fell asleep.
Oh ya and i play it perfectly the whole time at 52 BPM (half asleep) |

Damn people said snow before me, but you know what I don't give a damn. I'm in and i'm gonna do snow, I started learning last weekend and I can play it quite fast but it's too sloppy so it's my choice too. It's funny how certain songs keep getting chosen by multiple people. ADD ME TO THE LIST I SAY!

Haven't really paid attention to this thread lately, so I'm updating the list and answering some questions.

Great! Now we get to see if it works for beginners too! (I don't see why it wouldn't, but...) Quote:
You should play it 20 bpm slower than the fastest speed you can play it perfectly. So, yeah... go even ridiculously slower... Quote:
OK. Fine. You got your point across. But I still say that if you want to learn the chromatic scale faster, than this applies too. Quote:
The longer, the better, of course... And cool choice of song by the way.Quote:
Yeah, you got it. Sorry I didn't clear that up .Quote:
See how easy it is? If you can play it half asleep in three days, then after the 21 days, you'll be able to play the song half-dead. Quote:
Lol, true dat.

No i think it's only me and you practicing snow. I tired speeding up after you of my 30 minute session and i could play it about full speed but a tad sloppy. Can't wait to see what it's like after 21 ![]() EDIT: I forgot to do it yesterday so will it still work if i do an hour today to make up? Last edited by Ssargentslayer : 04-20-2008 at 06:56 PM. |

Well I am rubbish at guitar really, I can't play anything much, and the solo to The Final countdown looks impossible to me so I am practising that, I started yesterday and I can play it at about 20bpm (instead of 120) =D
