The 5th Annual S&L Community Thread

Schizophrenia by Jim Stevens
--
It was the house that suffered most.

It had begun with slamming doors, angry feet scuffing the carpets,
dishes slammed onto the table,
greasy stains spreading on the cloth.

Certain doors were locked at night,
feet stood for hours outside them,
dishes were left unwashed, the cloth
disappeared under a hardened crust.

The house came to miss the shouting voices,
the threats, the half-apologies, noisy
reconciliations, the sobbing that followed.

Then lines were drawn, borders established,
some rooms declared their loyalties,
keeping to themselves, keeping out the other.
The house divided against itself.

Seeing cracking paint, broken windows,
the front door banging in the wind,
the roof tiles flying off, one by one,
the neighbors said it was a madhouse.

It was the house that suffered most.

"So, Daniel, new thread, eh?"

"Yeah, s'ppose so."

"Every year, for the last four years, those silly old mods make a new one. Why do they even bother?"

"Because people need a place to talk about their lives, to express their thoughts, whether it be about a new CD or the lingering emotions from a broken heart. Nowhere else on UG offers that, whilst still being a community based around their shared love for writing."

"Yeah, it all sounds good, but what are the rules?"

"Simple rea... actually... no, they're not simple. In fact, they're quite complicated, and you'd need to be at least as wise as Carmel, as sweet as Zach, as quirky as Allen or as devilishly handsome as Jimmy. "

"Shut up, Daniel! What are the rules?!"

"Fine....

-no spam
-no vulgar content
-no pornography
-no flaming
-no advertising
-no whining

... Happy now?"

"Not quite. So what constitutes as spam? It's hard to tell what it really is sometimes."

"Well, anything that is unrelated to the topic at hand, anything that has been said before and received no response, anything that is inconsequential or could cause people to become annoyed. In other words, unless you have something to say that's a worthwhile conversation starter or encouraging, don't post it."

"What will happen to those who are annoying and keep whining and updating every step of their lives?"

"Nothing drastic. Just a lifetime spent watching the Friday video."

"Is that a joke, Daniel?"

"Yes. I hope you like it."

------------------

That's right, folks. Me, Myself and I (and of course our partner in crime, Allen) have just posted a new Community Thread! Please do not abuse our right to have this little guy here. Keep him clean, keep her fun and remember that it's about the community, not individual emotions. If you have any questions as to whether something is acceptable here, Allen and I will be glad to help.

PS - to anyone thinking I'm trying to be funny or that this is a joke - it's not.

Thank
You!

I'm sure this question has been asked 1008230823523 times, but where do you all write all of your material?

For me it's just some notebook I take to school with me everyday.

Computer mostly, or on my phone when I'm out somewhere.

I don't actually take a notebook with me everywhere I go. I find the notepad on my mobile phone works as a great substitute, as I'm really bad at writing and often can't read what I've just written. It's not very conveniant, either.

Not to mention that the phone can store lots of different phrases, sentences or ideas, that can then be imported onto the computer to be hashed together in some way. I'd much rather write in the sunshine on a proper notepad, but I never seem to have the urges to do that.

It's usually my computer, like AngryGoldfish said, but, I do sometimes use a piece of paper, but if it gets too sloppy I get angry with the aesthetics of it and toss it, even if it's good material.

I'm going to a drug rehab next week, so I'll bring a notebook to write, I'll hopefully get some good stuff out of it.

I prefer notebooks, generally (and my favorite spot is the back corner of the library around the the way. I like being reminded of all the possible ideas that are there, especially now that I'm trying to make writing a habit instead of emotional). Computers are nice, but bulky.

I've always written poetry in notebooks and stories on the comp. Poetry is a somewhat slower thinking process than storytelling, so I don't have to rush to get the ideas down, whereas storytelling is a lot quicker than I can write and I lose sentences faster.

I write almost everything on post-it notes next to my bed while I try to sleep. Then I type it up on here, edit as necessary, and post. Occasionally I'll do one OTS here though. After a while, if I decide the final doesn't need any more changes, I copy it into a spiral notebook.

My phone is my only source of technology these days so I write in notepads, which accounts for why I rarely post anymore, which is fine, because i'd rather post seldomly and put thought into it then do OTSs just to be prolific. I'll gladly be the Terrence Mallick to some folks Spielbergs.

I don't really write it anywhere. I sit down, think... "hmm, guess I'll write something" and then write directly into the Quick Reply box usually.

Whoo new thread!

New thread for a new year! yaaaaaaay.

I used to write in a little notebook and some stuff on the computer. Notebook on trips and the computer at home. I always keep a little scrapbook for stupid shit I come up with to amuse myself.

I tatto my verses onto the corpses of sluts that come into my tattoo parlor at 3 in the morning looking for another bad idea. I guess I'm just hardcore

I either write meh stuff on my laptop or as a note on my iPod, depending on where I'm at when I get inspiration. I used to write in notebooks, but then I discovered that I type faster than I write. I'm not too sure I should be trying to write it down faster, though...

to a new community thread!

Most of my songwriting is done at school, so it's usually on paper, but I copy it onto my computer.

I think it's my destiny to be strung out at a computer screen. Clinging desperate to the conception of literary martrydom. Wishing so bad that the words that I scribble were fiction, because that would mean I were creative. That would mean it's all been nothing but some crazy dream I had while drifting off as a child.

But, it's not. And more than likely I'll wake up soon with empty pockets full of regret.

I had rather hoped it might. Then I could get some validation on the internet and potentially form a better opinion of myself.

Why mock character flaws that you clearly suffer from yourself? It just makes you look like a fool.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis

Yes, comments on an internet forum do reflect upon the writer, but it's often difficult to tell in what way they do. Everyone appreciates a laugh, and I'm not denying that provoking laughter is enjoyable, but I fail to see in what way you can accurately say that this reflects in that way upon me.
