really, it is just the two full lengths and people are pretty much evenly split on which one is better. i'd take The White Birch because of "Wird".

Haha, I like how I made this thread and then my computer broke so I couldn't even discuss it. Slowcore has been a bit of an obsession of mine for several years now and is probably my favorite genre. Carissa's Wierd may actually be my favorite band. I tabbed a bunch of Carissa's Wierd/S stuff a while back, if I can find it I'll post it if anyone wants it. Also good to know that there's a new Rivulets album, I didn't know anything about it yet thanks to lack of internet.

Anyway, Down Colorful Hill is an A+ album for sure, and I'd agree hard with Medicine Bottle being possibly the most depressing damn song on the planet.

Also, everybody listen to this, somewhat unknown slowcore band that is ****ing FANTASTIC that I haven't seen anyone discuss outside of my initial post -

Early Day Miners - Centralia

Other stuff I'd recommend for those that haven't heard it -

Grand Archives - Sleepdriving (Matt Brooke's band after Band of Horses that returned to a slowcore sound)

Idaho - 20 Years

S - Not a Problem (One of the best songs Jenn ever wrote, from the last album)

Barzin - Nobody Told Me

Mi & L'au - Transparent

Sun Kil Moon - Carry Me, Ohio (Mark from Red House Painters' solo stuff, also fantastic)

Radar Bros. - Shifty Lies

Giles Corey - No One Is Ever Going to Want Me (possibly the most depressing album I've ever heard, solo project of Dan from Have a Nice Life)

Keaton Henson - You Don't Know How Lucky You Are (if any album is more depressing than Giles Corey, it's Dear...)

That Keaton Henson album is HEARTWRENCHING. The entire album wasn't even supposed to be released; he recorded the whole thing as a way of coping with his crippling depression, and has never played a show or anything like that, and he's very, very seclusive and has said that the fact that anyone can listen to it terrifies him and makes him feel like throwing up. He's said he will never tour and probably won't release another album if he ever records one. The outright painful honesty in the songs is just... horrifying and beautiful at the same time. I mean, listen to/watch this -

Guy's the closest thing to a modern-day Nick Drake out there in my book. It's really the intimacy of the whole thing that gets to me, I think. It's not something he's doing for commercial success or anything like that; he's doing it because it's the one thing that keeps him from offing himself. The whole thing's really, really depressing and really personal. Hell, the reason the album is titled "Dear..." is because he released very few copies of it, and the first 100 (I think it was) people that ordered it, he wrote "Dear _____, " with the name of the person who ordered it in the blank on the record with no other label. Always thought that was pretty damn cool. The guy deserves a ton more attention than he gets (it's completely baffling to me that he has less than 3,000 listeners on last.fm).

thanks to a wonderful youtube user, I've been listening to some pretty great full albums lately.

I really love Down Colorful Hill and Frigid Stars.

maybe the former a little bit more because I can actually understand the vocals. I feel like, in this kind of music, I can never really make out what they're saying.

So I just got a job DJing for my local college radio station and while I was digging through their music library today I came across Eric's Trip, Idaho, Galaxie 500 and Early Day Miners' Placer Found. I'm going to make all eight of my listeners feel feelings with me next shift.

I don't know, man. I'm listening to Giles Corey for the first time right now, and it's pretty darn depressing. I mean, Dear... is too, but in a different sounding way, I think. I like Dear... a lot though. (I also have you to thank/despise for my even knowing about Keaton.)

Giles Corey seems to be a lot darker, is what I guess I'm saying. just the overall sound of the music. I guess that kind of stuff bums me out more.

Sun Kil Moon and RHP have been filling my new cabin-in-the-blue-ridge abode with lovely noise

Young Love>>Richard Collopy>>Among the Leaves is such a mindblowingly strong stretch of great songs

it's a little bit like some of the more tense parts of among the leaves, but yeah still a good bit weirder than anything on there.

i was just digging into the stuff he's been doing since among the leaves. didn't even know about most of it until this week. been loving this one from the sun kil moon/album leaf collab lately

^ that's my favorite song off of that album. I'll forget about it for a while and then it'll just pop into my head while I'm walking or something.
