NGD (Tele, Tweed and more)

So there's a couple of things I picked up (some more recently than others) and I thought I would post them here.

First up is a Fender USA Deluxe Telecaster I bought in April.

Pics

What can I say, this is a beautiful Telecaster. The story behind this purchase is that for a few years I had a Tele which I sold cos I got a good price for it but always regretted doing. I sold my MIJ Jag and put those funds towards this, an American Deluxe Telecaster finished in 'Worn Cherry'.

Having got the salesman to bring every decent Tele in my price range to me I fell in love with this one. Not only does it look great but it feels and sounds like a big step up from the USA Standards. First of all the compound radius neck. Incredibly comfortable it makes fretting really pleasurable up and down the neck. With my Jag that had a vintage style radius it felt like I was working too hard at times higher up the neck. Not so here. Also the contour on the back makes the instrument very pleasurable to play as it doesn't dig in to your belly.

Then there's the pickup options. The N3 Noiseless Pickups have grown on me with time. I wasn't blown away by them when I got the thing but they're very usable. I'm not sure if I will change these out as I was intending to do when I bought it. The S-1 switching in the middle position gives an added tonal dimension to the guitar that's really worth the few extra pennies. Can get it sounding quite dark and thick with the press of a button (dark in a different way to the neck pickup).

The frills that come with this model - Fender/Schaller straplocks and locking tuners are also a bonus. The binding looks great too. All in all definitely worth the extra 140 or so that the Am Deluxe runs on the standard and I'm very pleased with this instrument.

Item 2 - new enclosure for my Ceriatone Vibro Champ built by Mark Phillips at AF Custom Cabinets (google it)

So my Ceriatone Vibro Champ came in a strange enclosure and had a very odd speaker in there (a 12" keyboard speaker I think). Having looked at all the well-known custom cabinet builders in the UK, and felt physically sick by the amount they charge for a custom build, I stumbled across AF Custom Cabinets.

It's run by a chap called Mark Phillips in South Wales (near Swansea) who builds all this stuff himself. I was gobsmacked by how much he charges for a custom build and the quality is excellent. His attention to detail is fantastic and he really knows his stuff (he gave me top notch advice on how to keep things structurally sound etc).

So I trundled down to his workshop and left my amp with him for a couple of weeks and picked up this tweed beauty. It's made of Baltic birch and finished in tweed with a lacquer coating on top, brown leather handle, and brown grill-cloth (true to the original Fender tweeds). I was really pleased that he was able to pick up on exactly what I wanted from the cab and made it a reality. Channels of communication were also very good all the way through the build and he kept me posted on the progress of it. Was also fast (2-3 weeks, though he allows 4 weeks for a build). Excellent value for money.

Inside I've got a Weber Signature Series Alnico 8" speaker. A tremendous improvement on the speaker in it before. I'm still breaking it in at the moment but already the tone is much punchier and has a lot more clarity than before. There's a bit of speaker breakup when cranked, which is what I wanted, and it sounds really sweet all the way up to that. In every respect it is much better than the old one.

If you want a cabinet of any kind built (for a combo or just speakers) I'd recommend dropping Mark an email as he is a very pleasant guy and his work is of impeccable quality.

Only thing I need to change on this now is the control plate on the top. The standard Ceriatone one is a black plastic sticker sort of thing. Need to swap it out for a chrome or brushed aluminium plate which I'll hopefully be getting made by someone locally in the coming weeks.

Lastly - Pearl Export Drums

Decided to pick up some drums because I was bored and fancied branching out. I don't really know how to review them but they sound great and I'm having a lot of fun playing them.

Lastly some shots of the rig I currently have setup in my basement as I write my EP. Hopefully I'll finish that off and record it in the next few weeks!

Enjoy!

Very nice! love the maple fretboard with the cherry burst finish! congrats! question: what is the red and chrome 'expression' pedal on the right hand side pedalboard? maybe its just the pic, but it looks extra wide or something!

That's my wah, an early 90s Colorsound Wah. The thing is enormous, even though the circuitry inside is tiny. Colorsound seem to like big enclosures (see Blue Fuzz Box as well).

The only thing that would make this better would be if the Telecaster had P90s in it.

That cabinet is beautiful. I might get that guy to make me a head cabinet for my JCM800. Also check your PM's.
