How employers research candidates

It's fairly common knowledge these days that employers can easily search you on social networking sites to get a taste of what kind of person you really are.

I'm looking for employment at the moment, and while I've maxed out my Facebook privacy settings and have no links with other social networking sites, I'd like to know whether there are other more powerful but less well-publicised search methods that employers use. Or are they limited by the privacy settings you choose?

Btw it's not that I have anything particularly embarrassing on my FB profile - I view FB as a completely social tool.

Thanks for any insight!

I doubt they can see through your privacy settings.

I have my Facebook account linked with my porn account so I don't really want my employers to know I love watching lesbian horse scat porn.

CRB checks usually are what people use

also i know people who've refused/walked out of jobs because the manager(s) demand to be their friend on facebook so they can look into the employees personal lives, luckily my employers don't do such thing as the NHS i doubt approves of facebook xD

If an employer sees that you have you have 100% privacy settings on facebook, they see it as you have something to hide, and look down upon it. I'm not saying that you should have your facebook be completely public or anything, but just keep that in mind.

And just google your name and see what you find.

It's not just your FB account -- employers can search for mentions of you and pictures of you anywhere on the internet. So tell your friends to take down those pics of you blowing flaming ping pong balls out of your ass.

BTW, I don't have a FB account and I never use my real name or identifying information when posting in forums like this one on UG. You just never know. I have a linkedin account which is all very professional and on the up and up.

Ok that's quelled my paranoia somewhat. I just think that your personal life shouldn't be used to judge how you would perform in your professional life.

And if I ever work for someone who wants to be my friend on FB, I'll either just accept and block them immediately, or create an entirely separate account.

Edit: yeah I googled my name and I get a bunch of professors and artists; and one guy with my name who was murdered recently. Got a bit spooked by that...

I'm not sure an employer can legitimately assume that, because they can see nothing on your profile, it is full of embarrassing and unsavoury things. If I had to explain my full privacy settings, I'd say I'm just a very private person (which I am) and conscious of revealing too much to potential identity fraudsters.

No way, that's an achievement I'm proud of. If an employer can't recognize that skill as valuable, then I applied for the wrong job.

I wouldn't want to work for anyone who was so close minded, or so interested in the mundane details of my life.

How I live my life outside of work, as long as it doesn't affect said work, is completely irrelevant in my opinion.

While this seems like a good idea in theory, the more you think about it, the less sense it makes. If I was an employer and I had to decide between two equally qualified candidates, except that one was a party animal with wild pictures all over the internet, and one at least attempted to have a semi-presentable social media profile, I think we all know who we'd pick. And it comes down to that a lot more than you'd think (well, not that extreme, but you know). Maybe a sad truth, but a truth nonetheless.

It's also a good tool for seeing if you lied in your job interview.

This is all a bit of a myth. Yes, potential employers can search you on the internet, but if they intend to use that as part of the decision process when recruiting they have to have permission, which usually means you'd have signed a form granting them permission to check you out.

Of course, if they request permission and you say no then you don't stand a cats chance in hell of getting the job.

True - I've never applied for a job outside the UK so don't know how it works elsewhere, but I'd have thought most countries have privacy laws which would cover it?

It's not really private if it's publicly on the internet...

No, but it can't be used as a reason to give one candidate a job over the other. Not officially at least.

If they judge my ability to do the job based on pictures of me pissed then fuck them. Don't want to work for them.

If they judge my ability to do the job based on my qualifications and by meeting me one on one then its all good.

Face to face interviews are easy to bluff, though. Most employers don't want workers who come in hungover every Monday morning.
