Pink Floyd are the greatest band ever. So should we make a list of basic prog for other hessians who aren't in the know?

aight well first things first, the entry level. King Crimson, Camel, Yes, Genesis. Figure next tier should be stuff like Gentle Giant, VDGG, Soft Machine. Then prolly want a psych/space rock section for shit like Floyd and Acid Mothers Temple. Also should have a Zappa section since most people have no clue where to start with him. I have some other bands I could add to the list, you and Moog will need ot do the other styles that i don't know, like all the italian prog and other obscure shit

Hey proggy, why aren't bands like Pink Floyd and Rush considered progressive?

As for Rush, my initial reaction is that it's basic song structure and leans more towards Hard Rock/Heavy Metal than actual Progressive Rock. I'm unsure about Floyd since I am checking them out at the moment. Proggy will answer that far more thoroughly than I, though. I iz nube.

The progressive elements present in the music are tacked on almost as an after thought rather than an integral piece of the composition. when stripped down, it reveals itself as popular rock with some prog quirks added on. both bands can still be enjoyable however

Rush I just see as having a very strong hard rock element on their prog material, and being hard rock for the rest of their material. I still think albums like 2112 and A Farewell To Kings should be noted though.
As for Floyd, matt is a chump. Sure, they lean more towards space/psych rock but just because they aren't as symphonic as Camel or Yes or aren't as quirky and eclectic as King Crimson or GG doesn't make them not prog, that's just silly.

Don't get me wrong, I love Floyd. I just see most of their material as prog-lite that was meant for a more mainstream audience. let's face it, they are easily the most successful band from that era / genre.

Where does Tool get put in all of this... I love Tool, also you should all listen to this, my favourite cover version of 21st Century Schizoid Man by a Jazz Band who then turned into a Metal band... I saw them play it live and it was awesome.
"Live" Version Studio Version My second favourite cover is the one with the Tool singer in.

Tool is neoprog, along with Diagonal and Porcupine Tree. Diagonal is more a revivalIst band. All this will be covered tommorow.
and I've seen the jazz covers, so good.

Certainly not in the early days...they used to hate playing live with Barrett, and didnt give a shite about reaching a new audience. There was a class documentary on them on last week, on bbc4.

So because they were had more mainstream success then other prog they are somehow makes them lesser prog? riiight. looks like what you like about prog is that it's complex music that most people can't easily get into which makes you feel special, and if that's the case that's just ******ed. They all made amazing music that was very innovative and progressive for their time, regardless of how much success any band got.
