Well yeah. Did they show footage of when he was a guest on that talk show and he didn't answer any questions?

its weird how Barrett was the topic of some of their best material. Like in the Wall where he shaves his eyebrows, allegedly Barrett wandered into the studio while they were recording and had his eyebrows shaved. One can also say he was Pink Floyd in the early days, and the main character in the Wall is Pink Floyd...

Edit - it has nothing to do with flashiness or enjoyability. It's just not rooted in the same format / structure as progressive music was, its more akin to rock

Ok, so how is a song like Echoes or an album like Animals not progressive music? Can you actually point anything specific out, cause all you have said is that they were too mainstream and not enough like standard symphonic prog bands. I don't really see how you can claim a piece like Echoes isn't progressive. Their music just focuses more on emotion and atmosphere than most other prog which I feel is centered around having very complex and technical compositions

but seriosuly, Echoes. Long atmospheric instrumental passages, a huge experimental chunk in the middle with crazy noises and effects, a surreal vibe to the whole thing, lots of improvisation and experimentation with the musical technology they had at the time in general. over 20 minutes in length. Yeah, totally sounds like your standard 1971 rock song.

I'll humor you.

give me a few days at most to revisit and familiarize myself with the material again. its been ages since I sat down with Floyd. at best, I change my views, at worst, I get anal.

I'll elaborate more on this tommorow, but rather than random conversation and recs, I figured we could take turns writing about an album, no matter the obscurity or popularity, and everyone will listen and comment on it for the week. This way the thread has a bit more direction, and anyone can participate.

that's a sweet idea. it'd be great to get in depth recommendations for prog.

Agreed

But I think we should still get an essentials list going, to get the ball rolling if you catch my drift

I was ok with it til he got to the Talking to the trees line.

the percussion ruins the ethereal atmosphere of original.

I've seen worse Crimson covers though

So, I know Rome does, but do any of you others enjoy the long/drawn-out/experimental/psychedelic jam sessions often found in prog music? As much as I love In the Court of the Crimson King I find myself always wanting to skip the instrumental part in Moonchild. That's the only part of the album I don't enjoy and I have a problem enjoying this type of thing in all music. Will it grow on you? I don't see what there is to appreciate about most of it...

Well, Primus is littered with them and I got used to it in my early years. As for Moonchild, I was driving at night with a light rain as I first listened to the album, and lightning was flashing in the distance, wounding the sky. I was so moved that I still have a soft spot for it, but it is definately not the best jam track they have done.

all the good ones are on Starless and Bible Black. Jams are great when they are tastefully executed. Have you listened to Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfooting yet?
