Nine year old boy lured from playground and executed in Chicago

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/...y-shot-35005746

A 9-year-old Chicago boy who was fatally shot this week was "lured" from a park into an alley and executed because of his father's alleged gang connections, police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Thursday in a crime he described as among the most "unfathomable" of his 35 years in policing.

Tyshawn Lee, an elementary school student headed to his grandmother's house, was shot in the head and back Monday in a neighborhood alley on the city's South Side.

McCarthy told reporters Thursday that the slaying was the result of two gangs fighting, potentially in a string of retaliatory events dating back months. He said the boy's father isn't cooperating with police.

...Yeah, Chicago is gradually fading off of the list of places I'm debating moving to. This is seriously fucked up.

Can't say I feel sympathy for the dad. Once you start a family you need to ditch that childish shit and start taking responsibility.

Yes, because gang affiliation is something you just quit, like giving up your membership to the Y. There's even an exit survey...

K.lainad, you could be the first in the pit to report that we have made contact with alien life and it'd still be a shit thread.

He is living the gang life after having kids. Irresponsible if you ask me.

And often not a choice, which is what you don't seem to being understanding. Trying to quit is often frowned on to the point of fatality.

I was under the impression that shooting 8 year olds because of their parents/siblings was generally frowned upon

and yeah you can't just go "sorry guys, I'm bored of this gang stuff", I've heard stories of people quitting and they've had to move to the otherside of the country or abroad and change their name, and even then they have to be really, really careful. They don't take people leaving lightly

People think gangs are a group of folks that hang out and occasionally commit minor crimes, sell a few drugs and occasionally get in a war with other gangbangers.

That's the made-for-tv "not in my neighborhood" version. (That's not to say that those don't exist, but they usually don't last long.)

Gangs, like any other enterprise (criminal or other) are about power and money. Kids as young as 8 are often used as mules because the penalties if they get caught are much less severe, but if you think that there's some sort of "code" that protects a gangbangers family you're sadly mistaken. The only way that works is through fear of retaliation.

The only notable part of this story is that it was reported.

I know that they get kids to do the dirty work because its less suspicious for a kid to be hanging around with a backpack, and if they do get caught they face lesser punishments. Plus it keeps their hands clean and its easy to coerce a kid, cheaper and often easier

I wasn't aware that kids get caught in the crossfire, I thought that wasn't really their game, but I guess thinking about it they wouldn't really care. If you're morally corrupt enough to get a kid to be a drug mule, you're probably okay with hurting a kid because of a rival gang affiliation
