Manual labour?

Have you done a significant amount of manual labour in your life?

This includes work with axes, shovels, picks, hoes, hammers, etc. It can be farm work, house work, road work, working in a workshop, working in a warehouse, working in a factory or just good ol' heavy lifting and carrying of heavy stuff. Basically any kind of job or errand that you'd deem physical labour.

As for the amount, decide for yourselves what a significant amount is because I can't think of a general definition.

You don't need to post in the thread, I'm just interested in the poll results.

Oh and it doesn't have to be an actual paying job, if you've helped out your relatives on a farm or paved your own drive way or something like that, it counts.

I have toiled in a field before, helped construct a shed, fed various beasties and many other things like cut trees and wood, tend vegetable patches etc.

I live in country Australia, it's what people do here.

I once got paid to help someone put up a shed the size of a small bungalow. My body ached for a week after. I'm not built for manual labour.

Edit: I enjoyed getting paid but I didn't enjoy the work all that much. I'd still be open to doing that kind of thing again though.

A sub-question:

If you have, did you enjoy it?

Obviously it's exhausting and physically demanding but I'm interested whether you got a certain sense of enjoyment or fulfillment from it, either from knowing that you're productive, knowing that you're helping someone or just from exercise.

Obviously giving some info about the circumstances would be useful for this question.

I'm a professional brewer. Picking stuff up and moving it around is a good 50% of my job.

Like I said in the OP, it's your call whether it was significant or not but doing your fair share would counts as a yes in my book.

i worked at a golf course for several summers back in high school and college. involved a good amount of manual labor. Now i have a salaried job and it still involves some manual labor but it's really not too bad and i get paid a lot more than at the golf course. so yea

Every summer I have to tend to livestock and sh*t like that. Probably 3-5 hours a day, everyday from early May to mid August. Then I usually spend weekends in the fall and winter getting fire wood for the harsh months.

I was shoveling horseshit at my dad horse stables when I was 10.
Only a few hours a week then.
When I was 17, I was doing it full time, 16+ hours a day, 3 days a week.
Cleaning out 40+ horse stalls takes a long time.

Edit:
And to answer the sub-question....
I was racing motocross at the time, the days I wasn't shoveling shit, I was training and practicing.
And the shoveling shit part, I purposely made it more difficult as part of my training regime.
Did I enjoy it? not really, but the results on my physical condition made it worth it.
