First REAL build: Firebird
Hello GG&A. Tomorrow (weather permitting), my first REAL build will be started (I put together a mostly Warmoth parts-Rhoads before and it turned out great). I have the help of my dad (generally knowledgeable, at least when it comes to putting stuff together and my grandpa, who is luckily a master carpenter.
Here's how it is: I have the plans printed out, full size. I have the wood, everything else arrives Monday. This guitar will mainly be for old people music and alternative (the sounds from the songs Something Else by Eddie Cochran and Next Year by Foo Fighters are what I'm going for). Body: Pine (It's what I can afford, and older Fenders used them so I figured "Why not?") Neck, hardware, etc: Off an old guitar I bought to rip the parts out of. Here it is (yes, I acquired it for MUCH lower than the price on that tag):  Pickups: Guitarheads Alnico Supremes. It will be HxH, two volume, two tone with switches instead of push-pull pots. Black and chrome with white pickguard (if you care about aesthetics). Essentially, THIS will be close (but with humbuckers, and I'll have two more switches to be cool):  If you wanna know anything else or suggest something, feel free to ask or tell. IF YOU WANT TO OFFER ADVICE, IT IS MOST DEFINITELY WELCOME!!! (help stop this from just being a waste of money, it won't be perfect but I want playable. The sub-par hardware will be upgraded in the future should this guitar be loved enough).

Be prepared to use filler on your pine. It's a bastard for dings. So unless you're REALLY careful with it, it'll be dented quite a bit by the time you come to finishing. It'll end up very light as well.

 And plans. From here I plan making the front and back separately. Three pieces on the front (each wing and then the raised center) and two pieces on the back. Ignore my mom's stuff.

Shame. I have to double post and keep this bumped. Oh well, here's clamps!
 And trying to dye with oil based paint. Any better tips on getting a black finish without spraying? The second one down, if I clean it up would be bearable, but I'd prefer a solid finish.

Looks cool man, you don't see many pine gibson shapes. As far as getting a nice color finish, what do you have against spraying? Good luck with your work and keep posting!

So no paint has ever laid down evenly. I've tried different thicknesses of paints, different amounts of paint per layer, different volumes and pressures, etc, it just has never worked the way I wanted it to.

If you could get some black wood stain I reckon you could get a pretty cool finish.
It obviously wouldn't be a solid black, but presonally I think it would look great  |

Pine firebird FTW!!! Just be sure to get some heavy pickups, since it may get a thinner sound with the pine wood *points at telecaster made out of pine* But may still be ok even like that so yeah, go with the hot Rodded set? I'm a little bit of a sucker for Seymour since most of my favorite artists (or rather just about all of them) uses Seymour.

Update: my router ended up being a piece of shit, and the bit slipped down a few times, going all the way through the body.

Hey wist, that pine looks nice, A black stain finish would look good I reckon.
I must ask why you plan on making the back front separately? It is certainly possible, I did it with my current thinline build, each piece was hollowed out then sandwiched together, I had some slight trouble as my pieces weren't evenly thicknessed though. Basically what I'm saying is it would be a good idea not to cut both of them to size, like leave the back rough cut then glue, and then use a follower bit in ya router to get the back to the same size. It gives you some room for slippage when glueing. As to finishes, you can use a oil finish over the stain, it'll have a textured feel/ look to it, which is quite cool, or if you wan't something harder wearing you could try a french polish which is shellac thats hand rubbed onto the wood layer after layer to build up a glossy finish. edit: make sure not to use alcohol based dyes with shellac, it doesn't like alcohol at all apparently.
