Best acoustic electrics sub $500

I am looking for an acoustic electric to start playing open mic nights under $500. I prefer used to get more for my money. What are some names and models to keep an eye out for on Craigslist? What should I avoid? I saw an acoustic electric Martin 000 from 2006 for $500. Is this Martin decent?

there are many martin 000's, so there's no way to know which one you're considering. if buying used, i'd avoid the X series martins and stick with all solid models. some more used acoustic electric brands to keep an eye out for would be seagull SWS models (usually maritime line), guild, breedlove, and if you get lucky, larrivee.

there are a couple new epiphone masterbilts you could get for just over your price range - and they often honor sales in store on items you can't get sale prices with online. with the current 15% off, one is in your price range and the other is very close. they're all solid, btw, and definitely worth a listen.

"000" refers the the size of the body: http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/choosing/size.html

I'm guessing they have at least a few guitars that are being, and have been, offered in that size.

000 is somewhat smaller than the more typically seen "dreadnaught" and "jumbo" styles. Here again, you should try different bodies, to find out what you'd be most comfortable performing with.

Body size usually has a somewhat profound effect of the overall tonality of an instrument.

You need to obtain more info on this particular guitar, before deciding, "it's the one".

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything off Ebay. But then again, you probably shouldn't let my phobias and quirks thwart your personal road to stardom, as it were.

"Sight unheard", generally isn't the recommended way of purchasing a guitar, and the whole Ebay paradigm doesn't allow for testing.

Well, it's not worth a whole hell of a lot more than that brand new: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...electric-guitar

I don't know if "made in 2006" is being passed off as a selling point, but it doesn't mean anything to me.

Personally, the whole made out of particle board, with micarta fret boards thing with Martin "X" series guitars offends me. It seem like they're trading on their name, as other manufacturers offer much more in material improvements at the same price range.

That said,Martin "X" guitars allegedly maintain the Martin sound philosophy throughout this budget line.

However, they offer this "Origin Series" giutar, with scenes of early Martin employees building instruments plastered, in a paste board MIC peice of crap, for only $50.00 bucks more... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...423484000000000

Or perhaps this X series with a tinfoil graffiti top: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...electric-guitar

My point being, is that Martin isn't the same company as at once was. Whether it's more progressive, or has merely prostituted itself, is still a matter unresolved.

Myself, I'd probably listen to the guitars Patti suggested, before I tossed any cash into the great void that is my perception of Ebay.

Ironically, setting "X" budget for buying a guitar, more often than not, results in exceeding it. Jus' sayin'.....

not a deal, i wouldn't bother. there are places that sell cheaper than mf and gc where you could come close to that new.

a decent deal? i'd say yes. is it one of those amazing deals? not really, but i really like guild quality - the GAD series delivers the goods, and the cases are super. you can buy it new for $799, so if it's in as good a condition as they say, and well set up, it would definitely be one i'd consider.

thats not bad. good find. if you can get it down to 425-450, that would be a great deal. probably not though. still at 500, like patti says its a decent deal.
