I've seen Jonathan Coulton in concert three or four times now. By my count, he's forgotten the lyrics to The Presidents, mis-cued the verse in Mr. Fancy Pants (he plays it on a Zen Drum), and goofed fingerpicking patterns on his guitar at least twice. He usually panics, swears, makes faces, and/or draws attention to the fact that he's playing to a packed house and screwing up. It's ridiculously endearing, in a way; we're there to see him perform and have a good time, not judge his virtuosity. It's just all part of the fun.

Now then, when I hear guys like Paul Gilbert talking about how they make mistakes on stage, something about it doesn't compute. I refuse to believe someone like Gilbert can screw up. It's weird.

I screw up too much. This is why I don't gig.

I just pick it up and play. I'm at that stage where I can now switch chords, pick frets pretty easily and even sound off something that resembles a solo. However, I have these days where not only can I NOT pick any frets, anything that I play sounds like complete shit, if you'll pardon my language. But yeah, it's all about the feel. And the practice. Or a combination of both. Just off the top of my head

Best of luck, and jam on.

I'm pretty sure everyone out there, from us, to Paul Gilbert and Satch have our days. Just keep soldiering on, you get there eventually.

Go to 2:40, Chris Brodrick messes up the solo pretty bad. If you don't know how good he actually is, just type his name into youtube and watch. The dude is a beast at almost every style.

I think it was the makeup on his face.

I am surprised how well Dave played, all things considered.

dude I have days like that all the ****ing time. I've been playing steadily for 16 years and it will never stop being difficult. But you will improve and you will start to feel confident once your fingers start obeying you.

Never. They never make mistakes.

Of course they mess up sometimes lol. They're human after all. Practice makes them miss less notes, so there you go. Keep practicing
