2nd build: Norse Baritone
Specs:
body - walnut neck - 3 piece laminated walnut fretboard - either rosewood or ebony scale length - 675mm (27") frets - 22 strings - 6 electrics - bridge humbucker, neck single coil, 1 volume control, 1 tone control, 3 way toggle switch bridge - tune-o-matic The shape will be a double cutaway, rather like a solid body ES-335 I intend to do a relief carving on the top based on the Norse carvings on the walls of Urnes Stave church in Norway. I am aware that walnut is not an ideal neck wood. I had some left over from the body so, to keep the cost down I decided to see if it will work in a neck. So here is what I have got done over the last few weeks The body wood ![]() Wood and the body template ![]() The body glued together and roughly cut out and the neck pocket routed ![]() The body shaped and the bridge pickup routed ![]() Control cavity routed ![]() Neck blank assembled and truss rod channel routed ![]() |

That looks sweet! A solid-body ES-335 style guitar has always interested me, but I can never find a production model. I'll be keeping an eye on this. What kind of finish are you thinking of?

![]() Interesting build, Walnut was a good choice for carving like that. And a walnut neck is totally fine, its plenty strong for such things. I wouldn't use it for a fretboard as its not super hard though. Your walnut looks a lot lighter than what comes from around here, where are you located out of curiosity?

it shouldn't matter, its more of where his lumber is from
![]() Looks like nogal or peruvian walnut, while more people in the states seem to get black walnut.

I don't think the pickup is high, it's just the body is large. It's a 335 style shape. This is looking really cool, the carving will be quite the task!

The photo angle makes the pickup look further forward than it is. The edge of it is about 21cm from the back of the body, which is about the same distance as on a les paul. I am based in London. The wood is American walnut, though I agree that it is a bit lighter than some other pieces I've seen. |

Wiring question:
I will be buying electrics for this soon and was wondering whether it is best to use 500k or 250k volume/tone potentiometers for a humbucker and single coil on the same circuit. Do any of you have any suggestions about this? Some progress updates: Neck roughly cut out ![]() Carving continues ![]() |

I'd either go for 500k, or the harder to find 300k.

I used a 500k on both of my humbucker/single coil tele's, it's probably the best idea. 250k would be pretty muddy on a humbucker.
