New Fender 2012 American Standard Telecasters Have Body Contour
Fender's new 2012 American Standard Telecasters come with a body contour/belly cut now.
What are your thoughts on it? I think it's a stupid idea to depart from the original design. I like the "plank of wood" history of it and I think they should stay to their roots on the designs of their guitars. I think if Fender made the cutaways of the Strat deeper, or made the horns sharper, people would want them to change it back. I hope they reconsider this, I want to get a tele sometime in my life ha ha. http://www.musicradar.com/news/guit...ies-2012-535714

While I do like the contours, I don't think they should make that a standard feature. Save that stuff for the special models and custom shop stuff. Leave the American series alone.

Why wouldn't you want a contour? It feels nice and it looks nice too.

I don't care. There are still plenty of models without the countour so just buy one of hose if you don't want it. It's not like the American standard is the only tele. And just so you know I'm a big tele fan not some young shred metal kid who hates anything that's not strat shaped with EMGs. I just don't see the big deal.

Odd that they'd do it on the Standard and not the Special or the Deluxe, but it's a nice option to have and there are plenty of other models to choose from if it really bothers you. I doubt it's going to matter enough to most people to cause them to buy or not buy the model.

I don't like playing guitars without contours. They're uncomfortable.

I don't have a "real" telecaster so to speak (Squier vintage modified telecaster 2 if anyone cares) and it doesn't have a body contour. It can get a little uncomfortable sometimes, usually when sitting down but when your standing up its not that big of a deal, although I can definetely feel the difference when I switch to something like a Strat, which is waaay more comfortable. So I think its a nice feature they've added in, although I really don't get why the people get so riled up over something like a contour. I mean its not going to affect your tone at all is it?

I wonder how the change in body mass is going to affect the sound?

I like the idea. I think that the standard is the place to do really logical improvements like this. teles are great, but their ergonomics are stuck in the 50's. time to join the 21st century. that being said, I hope they offer an "american original" or something that has the older design.
im all for progress, especially if it makes a guitar significantly better with little to no loss of character (I have a tele, I wish it had some ergonomics. really, its just a slab of wood) |

it would make me buy it. i can't buy a guitar without a forearm cut and belly cut. that usually means i either buy fender or make one myself. |

The Standard should be exactly that. A standard Tele or Strat. A very typical strat or Tele.

IIRC the deluxes have had that feature for a while. Most people buying American Standards aren't gonna be that bothered about it being vintage spec, and it's not going to make much difference to sound, so I'd say it's good purely for ergonomic reasons. So long as they don't start doing it to AVRIs or anything stupid like that...

Seeing a bit more of the modern guitar come back into the fender line, which is good. They still have the traditional fenders, but these might entice some people who didn't like say telecasters for example, because they were bulky and dug into your ribs (something i had as a little problem) but really, they're just that bit more interesting.
And copying suhr and andserson? Pretty good models to copy from. Its not what people like to hear when one of the largest brands copies these more lower key custom companies, but they're setting benchmarks on how its done nowadays. Fender see that and have made some good adjustments.

i like contours. my tokai pokes me a bit.
absolute ideal would be to have the option of either, though as colin says, it's not like all the other models don't have the contour, so...

They should make two Tele models like the normal and HSS Strat, one with the contour and one without.
