2x12 Cab Building & Planning Thread

Hey guys, Recently I wanted to build a guitar cabinet and a week ago my friend got a Marshall head amp that really wowed me. so now im looking for one myself but i dont have all the money in the world so i couldnt but a cab. So i decided to build one. I want a 2x12 just because it's a LOT cheaper. one question: Would it affect the sound quality compared to a 4x12? also i was looking at another cab build thread and i was thinking for dimensions, how's: L-31", H-29", and W-15". does that sound right? i think it might be a little big as in i would have lots of empty space. I hope to start on Saturday so i'd like a quick reply on dimentions. Thanks Guys!

well, a 2x12 will sound full and boomy but still be portably compared to a 4x12. however, simply put, 4 is just more.
the dinensions will affect the tone. thats part of making a good cab. that and build quality, speakers, and acoustics. i would say the best points to consider are going to be overall design, build quality, and open/closed/convertible/semi closed back. of course, do not cheap out on the speakers. given the quality and price, i would say WGS speakers are about the best value out there today. second is eminence probably |

i guess it would.. with a bigger internal space. you have more air being moved around.
i recently had to plug my 5.1 subwoofer hole to cut the vibration. would work on the same principle.. less space for air to move around. less bass would be produced & vice versa |

Wesbanez built a killer 2x12" on this forum... let me see if I can find a link, it contains the basic dimensions that you can use
here it is: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1363496 EDIT: a cab with a nice wide open back is much less susceptible to tone changes from dimensions, if you've got ported or closed back then you start getting a lot of variation from dimension changes there's countless articles about it and you can basically mathematically tune your cab to a certain pitch emphasis, open back is probably much simpler in the end

i dont know enough about it to give advice, but yes the type of wood, thickness of wood, inner domensions, acoustics, speakers, everything.
i mean, all it does is make the sound come out. end of the signal chain. |

i just figured the dimentions out (about time) and i did adjust the height and width a little. so i'm probably going with: W-15" L-27" H-20"
I'm thinking of raising the heigh just because i've been looking at some other sites dimentions and they seem higher. so i'll see what i can get done today.

UPDATES!!
got a lot done today with some spots that need touch ups here and there. Here's the main idea:   stinking nails:   perfect:  gotta get the nails out and i will cut for handles.

im not sure which side the front is
 looks pretty clean minus the nails hehe did you change your plans to a 1x12? Edit: nevermind, it just looks really square so i assumed it was a 1x12.

not really an update but i cut the plywood for the front. im selling an amp so i can buy speakers with that money. here's a pics:
 also bought the head amp. its a Peavey Vypyr 30 head amp and should be here Friday. A pic:  thats all for now. ill cut for the speakers tomorrow.
