Crate Blue Voodoo info for us cheap asses

The Crate Blue Voodoo series is an all tube american made entry level guitar amplifier.

The Blue Voodoo models: BV60, BV60H, BV120H, BV150H, B300H.

I would recommend JJs in all spot for the BV series. You will thank me later.

BV-60/BV-6212
Lowest wattage BV at 50watts RMS, fixed bias. Two channels, separate reverb controls, effects loop. The BV60 can run either 6L6 or EL34 without adjustment(combo only). Two 4 ohm and 2 8ohm speaker outs

BV-60H
Identified by 2 speaker outputs main and extension. (impedance selector switch added)

BV-120
100watts- 4 6L6 power tubes, 4 12AX7 preamp tubes including the phase inverter. It's a two channel amp, clean and distortion, along with built in reverb with separate controls for each channel. It also has an effects loop with with a -12db button to help with volume drop off. It's an adjustable bias amp- if you replace the power tubes you will need to check it. Speaker cab impedance is only 8 or 16 ohms, selectable by a switch.

There are 2 versions of this amp, the blue tolex with gold logos and the later black tolex. The older Blue/Gold has potentiometers with plastic shafts, the newer Black/Chrome has metal potentiometers, they also have a built in turning resistance to give a higher quality feel.

Be forewarned- the shafts of the potentiometers can(and probably will) pull out partially or fully resulting in a bad potentiometer. No fun as you may not discover until you have put the chassis back in. Leave the knobs off until you have fully tested everything including pushing/pulling on the potentiometer shafts.

BV-150h
150watts, 3 channels. Lots of tubes! Clean, rhythm, lead.

BV-300H
3 channels and a mother load of tubes.
8 12AX7, 2 12AU7, and 6 6550A's. !!!!!!!
Has a mid frequency selector, high and low frequency pots, rear bias pots and test ports.

Here are my personal favorite modifications for the BV120 from ECistheBest:
Clip C8, C17,R101.
Bridge R25
Change C14 to 390pF, change R28 to 1K, change C16 to .047uF, R24 to 100k.
Replace the treble and mid pots(P6&P7) to 250K audio taper (must be obtained form crate, part numbers 70-254-22(for the cheap potentiometer) or 70-254-70(for the original style pot that has an extra feel to it), you will need 2). ****Pots are 16mm alpha. Mojotone has a pretty good selection of them.

Also check and make sure R26 is 47ohms, both of mine had 1k resistors instead.

Common issues
Bias trim pot- you must remove the lower cover for access- also you can see the two PCB's- the small one is the power tube board, if you find a socket is higher or lower during bias you probably have a bad 5w resistor- they are 470ohm +- 5%, even within spec they can cause a few mA difference

For dead tube sockets check your solder joints

Other problems:

Crackling from speakers
Like all tube amps the socket connections need to be cleaned to prevent poor contact. You can tap on the tubes, if an audible noise comes through the speakers you need to clean or replace the socket. It uses Belton power tube sockets, 20mm PCB mount ones for the power tubes.

Channel select inop on head
If your channel switch doesn't work from the head but works from the foot switch than the contacts for the foot switch jack are not touching. This is an easy fix once the chassis has been removed. Plug the foot switch(or any 1/4 inch cable) into the jack and than press on the contact to bend it slightly. Once you remove the cable it will now contact.

Reverb acts like a tone adjustment
If your reverb acts like a tone knob then see if the reverb tank can move around on it's screws- It's supposed to be a little loose to isolate if from the vibrations of the amp. If its too tight or cocked in place it won't function as it should.

Inoperative- no lights behind the tubes and no sound
Another problem that can develop is the fuse holder overloading. Symptoms of this would be no lights turning on behind the tubes, along with no sound output.

See the fuse holder on the left? Look at the PCB as well.

FAQ:

Where do I find replacement knobs? Call Crate.

Where do I find replacement potentiometers? Call crate.

If I need to replace my input jack what style do I needs?
JACK, 1/4", PC MOUNT, STEREO, 5 PINS, SWITCHED, METAL BUSHING.
Both tip and ring conductors are switched (normally closed).

What the phone number for Crate parts/service? 1-866-858-8532 (Loud Technologies)

Got any measurements? I wonder if some of my small ones would fit. That sort of info is handy to know.

The shaft pulled out with the knob... thats why the case was removed.

4mm shaft diameter, 29mm total length, 15mm case width.

Any other measurements you need?

These may just fit:

They don't go as high as 1M though.

I dunno Cath- the shaft is pretty different. The presence pot is a bitch- it's a 20KRA pot- 20Kohm reverse audio taper .

Good news is that crate is very easy to work with and they have the pots in stock, plus they are under $3.

Alpha is the OE supplier.

If ones from Crate are that cheap then you may as well go direct.
The ones I linked to are sealed jobbies though.

Here's the dimensions anyway:

It's the shaft that doesn't work. There is no stand off between the case and the shaft that turns. The Crate one has a 6mm standoff before the threads.

Thanks for posting the link, worse comes to worse someone could get creative.

YES! thanks for making the BV thread! ill be hanging out here from now on. lol

quick question tho. i thought there were 3 versions of this head. the blue with gold and then there are 2 black and silver. the made in america black in silver (the one i own) versions have all control markings on the amp in a hand written looking writing and the last one so i have been told is made in china with standard print writing on them and these ones crap out more often.

oh and what exactly do those mods do?

I have never seen or heard of the chinese version? That would be news to me.

The mods I listed are for the channel 2, gets rid of the mud and improves the sound of the distortion. After it was completed you have to work to get the EQ in the wrong spot. The mid control has a huge impact on overall volume.

If you post any info that you have I would gladly add it. It's still in progress and hopefully I will have the rest of the info up later this week.

hmmm that sounds like a good idea to try. if i had a second BV id def. give it a go

ill do some looking because there are two different styles of the black tolex BV amps. the shop that i sent mine to had the other one there. its more than likely the same internally but the outside is a bit different.

oh and i would LOVE to get ahold of the bv300. i think esptro has one.

actually its the 150

but damn, i dont really see the need for mods on my amp. the only thing i would want to fix is for some god awfull reason my guitar sounds...."out of tune" ever so slightly out of my amp and not my marshall.....

i also notice this on some blackstar HT heads.

triode took down the link. i live 45 away from that guy. he is the guy i got my sovtek mig from. maybe he will make another kit.

he is a nice guy, noticed a slight issue with something fixed it on the spot immediately and knocked a few bucks off because i had to wait 20 mins for him to get it straightened out.
