Most important part of a cabinet?

Hi,

I am currently running a Marshall JVM 210h into a wharfedale 4x12 speaker cabinet loaded with wharfedale speakers, and well my amp sounds horrible if I turn the gain up too much.

I then plug into my band mates Marshall 1960s Lead and it sounds amazing, I'd like a clearer a sound'ish but it sounds a thousand times better than the wharfedale cab that I'm using.

I'm wondering if loading in new speakers into my cab V30's for instance will change the sound dramatically or does the other parts of the cab make a lot of difference as buying new speakers will be cheaper for me than buying a new cab.

Your in EU right?

Look at the Harley Benton cabs on Thomann.de. They have them loaded with V30's in 2x12 and 4x12 cabs. Very inexpensive and diecent for the price.

I wouldn't bother trying to upgrade your cab.

It's because Greenbacks are the bomb, especially the 60s ones. (assuming your bandmate hasn't butchered the cab)

All amps sound like shit when you turn the gain up too much. On a JVM you shouldn't even need it any further than about midway.

But yeah, do get a new cab. Don't bother swapping the speakers, more unnecessary extra money spent. Used 1960a cabs go for super cheap all over the place. 4 V30's costs $560, used 1960's often are around $400.

I wouldn't say that... A well designed amp will give you functionality at all levels of gain.

Such amps tend to be expensive though.

1960a and 1960b cabs are loaded with G12T-75 speakers and 1960av and 1960bv cabs have V30s in them. No greenbacks there. The 1960ax and 1960bx were loaded with Greenbacks. I'm not sure they are even still available in current production. Check the actual model number or open up his cab to see what he really has that you like the sound of. I say open it because my cab is labeled as a 1960A and I bought it new, but it has V30s in it for whatever reason, not that I'm complaining.

This - except the bit about V30's in a 1960A. I'm guessing somebody did a speaker swap before you got it. It should, as you say, have G12T75's in it.

It was new in the box and from a trusted dealer and a rep I had dealt with for years. It's labeled 1960a, has V30s and the rep knew it had them because I asked for a cab with V30s not for a 1960A specifically. I know it's weird, but for whatever reason that's what it has in it.

IDK buddy, my Mesa RA100 sounds great with full gain (if it's hooked to a nice cab though).

OT What about swapping just the speakers of your cab? Are Wharfedale cabs good?

It's an odd one for sure. I bet there is a back story behind it that you aren't privy to.

It's a Slash Signature Series cab (only V30 can they had in stock) which may have something to do with it. It has the Slash logo on the front. Not sure if they popped V30s in a 1960A cab for some reason on this one. It makes no sense really. I'd just take a 1960AV and put the Slash logo on it.
