I don't know if I've said this before but the new Van Halen album is one of the worst mastered recordings I've ever heard. It's almost unlistenable.

When you load a song from the new VH album into audacity it looks like a solid block. I think it has a dynamic range of 0.001dB
Whoever mastered that album, and the people that signed off on it, should be taken out the back of the shed with a double barrelled shotgun and put out of their misery.

Dear Craig,

Is the Hybris really going up to $1299 after the "NAMM Special Price," or is that $1299 marked as the "Regular Price," like the MSRP/List?

I want one, but I don't know if I'll be able to order within the next week or two, and I don't want to have to pay $300 extra for it if I miss the "special price" time frame. But then I don't want to put it on my credit card because I'm thinking I'm getting a great deal, and then turns out I could've waited and saved myself the debt

If you really want to prove there's a difference, try frequency plot graphs and oscilloscope traces showing the differences in clipping characteristics while the tubes operate in their linear regions (which is how everyone operates their amps unless they're one of the very few who crank their amps up to 10 when they play). You will find there aren't any appreciable differences.

The clipping characteristics of kinkless beam tetrodes and pentodes are different. Fairly significantly, actually. But in reality, those differences won't become apparent until their operating far outside of their linear region, and these differences are minimized via real world circuit interactions, and furthermore via the addition of global negative feedback across the output stage, which serves to linearize the output, decrease clipping and minimize tube tolerance variances by extending bandwidth and lowering gain. Go take a look at the average plate characteristics graph for each tube.

The biggest difference between SEDs and other modern EL34s is that they're rated for much higher voltages, much like the older European manufactured ones, and they're more mechanically rugged.

2 of my books arrived the Designing tube preamps for guitar and bass, along with valve amplifiers.
