I didn't care much for the standard Cry Baby until I modded it. For the price you can get them used though, it's not bad I guess. I got mine, a Cry Baby from the '80's, for about $20.

Guitar Center has them for $40-50. They also have Vox V845 for the same price and I can't decide between the 2.

I got my Cry Baby at a pawn shop for $25.
Then modded it.
IMO, stock, they suck.

Well like Rob and myself have said, they're nothing to write home about stock. They sound best with a few easy mods done, but be careful if you're buying a new'ish one, as I believe they've switched to all SMD components, which would make modding more difficult if you don't have experience with SMD stuff.

I'd get a cheap used one on eBay to mod and save up for a nicer wah while you work on the CryBaby.

^^^ i used to think the stock crybaby sucked, but i got mine out again recently for a laugh and i don't mind it anywhere near as much as i did. i dunno if my ears have gone crazy, or using a boost (or two) makes a difference (i used to go straight into the amp), but it sounds nowhere near as obnoxiously trebly and thin as i used to think it did. EDIT: also I'm using different speakers and amps now, too. and probably different guitars. yeah come to think of it it's not so surprising that it sounds different.

that being said, it's not perfect and a few mods would probably help. to smooth out the treble a little and fatten out the tone a bit, those things would help.

on the cheap though, it's not terrible. i have one i bought probably 7 or 8 years back, though, so what the new ones are like Plus i haven't tried the vox, it may well be the better option.

I have a pretty modest setup, OD, Chorus, reverb, compressor, delay. Right now I'm looking at the Modtone MT-PB8, but I can't find any info on it in terms of whether it's isolated or not. I would assume it's just a daisy chain?

if the description doesn't say isolated, it isn't. that's a feature manufacturers boast. look at a used t-rex fuel tank junior and a daisy chain. it'll power all those easily. and should only run you like $70. and if money's an issue, a $5 ikea GORM shelf can hold you over until you can save up for a used pedaltrain.

crybaby's fine for that price. definitely get it used, though.

Any specific mods you would suggest? I have a standard Cry Baby and fairly sick of its ugly sweep

why did i not think of that... Got excited one day and built a board, its good and it works but once the sense of achievement wears off its just an impractical heap of wood.

A few here:

IMO, this one made the single biggest difference (Same site as above):

And for an output buffer (Bottom of page):

Yep, the first link is where I found all the mods I did to mine. Can't remember them all now. Since mine was an older model I kept the outside stock and just swapped values around and what not.

You can go as crazy with it as you want though, and add potentiometers or switches in certain places instead of just swapping values. The sky's the limit on modding simple circuits like a wah.

might go for exl117s, actually. top three go back to 11s, bottom three go up a bit. after a while, i think the 12s are just a little too heavy on the high e.

Yea, UE4 has me a bit worried. Dunno if my current set up will be able to handle it with more detailed games. Will definitely wait for the 800 series and Broadwell before I bother updating though. Could live with medium settings for a few months.
The Witcher 2 is awesome, but I won't dare try it on my current PC. I had considered waiting until it came out on console, but I imagine it's going to be a poor port and is worth waiting for the right system to run it on PC. My brother raves about it all the time, but he has a system that can perform it well.

As you say, don't bother upgrading until the games are actually released. It could be another year before we see the engine being fully utilized, at which point the 800 series will be out and you can either run a 680 in a pair (if you have the PSU for it) or invest in an 800 of some kind. Cards and software will be released specifically designed for Unreal 4, so I'd say wait it out until you know what's going to be the most befitting of it.
