Alternative and Indie are not genres, don't make this mistake again please.

You don't call them anything because they're not a thing. Give some example bands, most "indie" is Britpop (instead of independantly produced music) and "alternative means absolutely anything, the guys that tagged the CDs were just damn lazy.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. Is rock a more fitting name to explain alternative?

Well it depends which bands you're talking about.

I my Windows Media Player library it has The Cure (New Wave), Depeche Mode (Electro Pop), Pearl Jam (Grunge), The Sex Pistols (crap Punk) and about 100 hours of other shiz they couldn't be bothered to label properly.

it's like Nirvana's song Negative Creep is "alternative" and so is Radiohead's song I'm a creep. Very different but considered the same.

That said, Nirvana is great for learning to, especially the Bleach album.

Surely, as soon as people started using Alternative and Indie as names for genres...they became genres?

If someone uses an adjective, and they've conveyed a style or sound to you... I really don't see why it needs to be more complicated than that.

Anyhoo, some good indie/alternative songs bass-wise

Like eating glass - Bloc Party (Post-punk revival)
Positive Tension - Bloc Party (Post-punk revival)

Shoot the Runner - Kasabian (Britpop)
Club foot - Kasabian (Britpop, Psychedelic)
Butcher Blues - Kasabian (Britpop, Psychedelic)

Here it goes again - OK go (Power Pop)
White Knuckles - OK go (Funk Rock)

And pretty much anything by Franz Ferdinand (Not necessarily the hardest songs ever, but effective basslines (post-punk revival)) and Evertything Everything (reasonably difficult, Indie (Art Rock)). Just goes to prove how all encompassing the term Indie/alternative actually is.

It isn't because they haven't.

Because alternative is too vague to mean anything at all and indie already has a meaning in music.

That's why Kasabian fall under the ''alternative'' heading.....

Anyway, as Alternative covers virtually every genre, it doesn't make a flying f**k of difference whether it's released on an an Indie label or not.

Alternative first was used to describe unknown or underground bands in the 70s and 80s that didn't quite fit the normal playlists of radio (aka corporate, big rock bands like the Stones, Pink Floyd or what is now considered "Classic Rock"). I know I lived through that. Most of what came out on Sire Records was considered "alternative" at some point.

I agree--learn some Radiohead stuff, Colin Greenwood has some great bass lines. And if you want to get a bit more funky--check out Gang of Four. I'll also throw in Fugazi and fIREHOSE.

Hey, how about we forgo labels and just give a ball park answer?

"Cities Made of Ashes" - Modest Mouse. Simple, loud, good.
