Depending on how you wire them either 32 ohms in series or 8ohms in parallel. You want to do the latter one

Is there any way of wiring them so they are 16 ohms? Or should I get two 8 ohm speakers and wire them in series to make the 2x12 16 ohm?

I believe you can get to 16 ohms if you mix in an 8 ohm speaker.
16 ohm----parellel---->16 ohm----series---->8 ohm = 16 ohms

That's correct, you can also get 16 ohms from 2 16 ohm speakers...

Just leave one disconnected.

What is it you are ACTUALLY trying to accomplish here?

What is he going to do, glue the third speaker to the top of the cab?

No part of that setup is a good idea. Using mismatched cabs is silly.

But why? You'd cut the power handling drastically since the 8 ohm cab would see way more wattage than the 32 ohm cab. Plus it would cost way more to buy a third speaker and a 1x12 cab than it would to just get two 8 ohm speakers.

I understand that mathematically it's possible, but by any practical measure it makes no sense at all.
