Ed Sheeran - why does he have material wrapped around headstock near nut?
Hi all
I was asked this question earlier today and don't have a clue. My instinct is that it is decorative as i cannot think how it would effect tone. But the person I was chatting with seemed to think it might have something to do with the guitar and how it performs... Can anyone enlighten me? Cheers Max |

I know some people tie something around the first fret just to mute the strings.
Usually if they're doing a lot of tapping or something like that and they don't want open strings ringing out. |

If you have a very resonant guitar between the nut and the tuning pegs then people put stuff there to stop the unwanted resonance, ive only really seen it done in studios, or for muting when playing solo
Plus it might be because he sucks at guitar

I would suppose it's so the strings don't ring behind the nut and cause unwanted noise. Antoine Dufour ties a bandana at the headstock for that reason.
This is different to players like Guthrie Govan an Greg Howe using a hair band at the first fret to mute unwanted string noise. I don't think it's purely decorative, but maybe Tom 1.0 is right.

matthew mcghee uses one under the net when he taps, however that is serving more of a purpose than above the nut, that just seems like simple jackassery if used live
