Krank It UP! the official thread for Tony Krank amps

Alright guys, since we don't have one of these and I think that is a CRIME, I decided to make a thread devoted specifically to Krank amplification. I am not super well educated, but here is the rundown as best as I can do it:

Krank Amps

The Rev series 1: The flagship amp! this is THE krank amp. the original gen. 1 Revs came with 5881s, the gen 2 comes with 6550s, and has a few updates. This is a two channel, 120 watt high gain beast. There is also a 200 watt hybrid version with a solid state power section and tube preamp.

revhead__09675_zoom by bllyfen8, on Flickr

The Krankenstein: To put in the words of Dime: " They hotrodded the hotrod!" This amp also feature 6550 power tubes, and has the same features as the Revolution, but has the "Dime" channel, custom voiced for Dimebag Darrel. This amp has more preamp distortion than the Rev as well.

krankenstein by bllyfen8, on Flickr

The Nineteen80: Again, very similar to the other amps, but this one is a bit looser in the bass, as it is aimed at older, hotrodded 80s tones. Still a ton of preamp gain, though it is only 80 watts vs. the 120 sported by the rev and krankenstein.

1980 by bllyfen8, on Flickr

The Chadwick: This is the blacksheep of the heard. This features two 5881s, and is aimed at classic british tones, the clean side aimed at a more ac30ish vibe while the overdrive channel is voiced similar to a JMP, with a switchable gain that allows access to more distortion. The envelope dial is designed to tighten or sag the sound, depending on which side you are on. The clean channel is a little more developed on this amp, and has more of a range of sounds. The original Chadwick was single channel, just drive, and came with KT88s.

chadwick by bllyfen8, on Flickr

The Jr. series: There are jr. versions of the rev, krankenstein, and nineteen80, all available in 20 and 50 watts. Most of these feature minimal clean controls, just bass, treble, and volume (bar the rev jr. standard, which just has volume), with a normal layout drive channel, boost function, and switchable active effects loop, like their big brothers.

Stiff Amps

Since Krank is now defunct, one of the two new companies that Tony Krank has started is Stiff Amplification. More or less the Krank line-up in new head shells.

These come in two sizes, the Lil Stiffy (25/50 watt mini head) and the Standard (100 watt head)

The three flavors:

Fist Pump:
From what I understand, this is meant to be the Revolution

90 AD:
This is the 1980

Dirthead:
This is the Krankenstein

Stiff Amps 1 by bllyfen8, on Flickr

Stiff Amps 2 by bllyfen8, on Flickr

There is also a second company Revolution amps, but not a lot is out on them.

Feel free to correct me on anything or add info., the krank website is very limited so I am working with a small amount of knowledge. Krank it up guys and gals, post away!

I've always wanted a Krankenstein. Tried a friend's and it was amazing, gets those nice treble heavy high-gain sounds that I love.

I don't see how it would be damaging. I got called C-dog for a number of years despite not being a dog. I turned out alright.

Yeah I'd imagine that the krankenstein would have a lot of treble considering dimes tone. I am very interested in picking up the chadwick or nineteen80, as soon as I can sell my Ibanez, I probably will buy one.

i am wanting one of the Rev Jr.'s for easy transportation.

i haven't played one.

so if somebody knows, how is the headroom? a little edge would be fine but i wouldn't want much.

i like the current lunchbox amp (Orange Dual Terror) and don't like moving it around.

are they decent for being smaller amps?

most use would be unmic'd however there are major volume restrictions at the bar i play open mics at so i know it would be loud enough. they aren't worth hauling a full-size head and cab.

Headrooms awesome. Through my texas heats I got it at an acceptable gigging volume before there was any noticeable breakup on the dirt channel. The kleen channel pretty much sucks, I'll come right out and say that, but it stays clean until about halfway on the dial, which is fairly loud. The quality is awesome, it definitely doesn't sound like a small amp, and it is a very sturdy build, definitely what you would expect from a made in america amp. I know that I have talked to you about this already, but I really think you would like it. It does have its own flavor, but it isn't so bizarre that you can't get a "normal" metal tone out of it , kinda 5150ish but much, much bigger sounding, more low end, but now flubby rectifier low end. I know that I sound like a fanboi, but I am speaking from the heart, this is a badass little amp.

yea it was initially you who turned me on to it. next one $250 or under is mine.

how is the mid gain, that is oddly what i use most. the place i am playing open mics at plays blues/classic rock type stuff and i want to make sure it would function decently for that purpose while still being able to bring it to band practice (although i am not in one at this time), or to play with fellow musicians at their place.

Without the boost on, it is actually a very functional mid gain amp, but I don't think I would get it for that purpose. If you mess with the sweep knob and keep it far towards the left you get some nice more classic tones, but it still has a modern edge. Don't get me wrong, it will do it, but that is definitely not this amps forte. I did surprisingly pull some nice country tones, but that might have more to do with my technique, (chickn pickn makes everything sound country)

Me neither, maybe somebody will come along with something, but I don't really have any info right now, so I don't want to put in the OP.

I've always wondered about those. I feel like they would have a really unconventional circuit for some reason. To Dave, I probably will get the 1980jr this year, but that's only if I can't find the cash for a Chadwick. Really want a Chadwick, like, it's painful how bad

It's a really good pedal. Nice,thick, high-gain distortion.

^^ I bet dude.

^ yeah, the rev jr. Is sweet man, awesome high gain sound, definitely the best small head for metal in the price range, arguably THE best small metal amp, except for maybe the baron snott watt, I would love to see an a/b of the two

never tried a chadwick either. wasn't it discontinued and replaced by the 1980?

I saw the "MONSTERS OF HIGH GAIN" video for the 1980, and while the tones from the TFK dude sucked, Misha's tone out of it made me quite interested.

Anyone have any clips?
