Liquid Tension Experiment, basically Dream Theater but even more prog metal and no vocals. Acid Rain would be a good song to start with.
This is all I can offer, if you don't like prog metal then you probably won't like it

Jeff Loomis is very good, modern music.
Racer X (Paul Gilbert) around since the 80s (I think) has lots of videos.
Both of these bands / acts, among many others like Opeth, are influences for my buds' band ...

band: KYNESYS song: Design 22 (instrumental)

location: Ontario Canada genre/style: Death Metal

* Although this video features an instrumental song, Kynesys usually performs / records with a vocalist.
