I've always said that musical quality should absolutely be relevant in the voting, and IMO this round shows why. I probably would have voted for Forefather, except that I could get any sense of pride from their album because all I could think of was how bland the album was, despite how obvious they tried to make it.

Destroyer 666 don't make their songs about pride, but their music evokes that sense of pride much more effectively. One band may play in a style that better fits a certain theme, but better music provokes a stronger emotional reaction and produces a more powerful mental image, and that definitely matters in the thematic relevance department.

If I had included D666 in my reviewing process, they would've won.

I thought it would be unfair of me to do so since I personally put them in, due to FallenAngels absence.

See, I'm aware there are better albums that convey feelings of pride, but I opted for OITK purely because of the abundance of pride. Had I know people put just as much value on the musical quality I'd have probably picked a different album.

See, this is how I thought the game goes. You choose an album that is most faithful to the theme, not the best album period. Of course, if the album sucks musically, you won't choose it, but if an album can express the theme well, then it probably is good musically too. This is what makes this game so interesting, to see how classic metal albums fare against lesser known albums. Because the classic albums can't just win everytime

While not everything is concrete, here's how I see it

-Does album fit the theme mechanically?
-Does album fit the theme aesthetically?
-Does album do a good job of this?

That is what I am grading the albums on myself.

huh, interesting topic. As far as metal goes, I think I would have picked Gigan - The Order of the False Eye.

Bluenothing is a great choice, nothing quite like it and it is very sincere in its strange nature.

Really though I cannot wrap my head around the number of eligible albums out there, metal and not.

Thematically yes, lots of strange orientated music out there. But present to me an album whose very notes and structures are uniquely strange and you've piqued my fancy.

But even then I would still agree, many eligible albums out there which made this theme even more exciting for me.

Wildchild and if you are out there, Kepulix, I cannot wait for your theme to be presented.

As far as metal goes, the obvious choices for the theme would be Obscura and Nespithe. I probably would have gone with one of Tom Waits' more experimental albums.

Everyone in this contest seems to have different voting standards. This round in particular really brings it out, given how close the voting is.

I wouldn't say I place "just as much" value on musical quality as thematic relevance, but rather that musical quality has a significant influence on thematic relevance. Crypticus beat King Diamond because they conveyed that horror atmosphere better, but the fact that they conveyed it so well is part of the reason why They Called Me Mad is such a good album. If it hadn't conveyed it as well, I think it's thematic relevance would have been questioned and I would have ended up in the Colosseum.

Indeed. Imagine having to choose between those two,

Personal pick would must have been non-metal to keep things interesting. Ben Monder - Flux most probably. Some Bartok maybe? Which album? lololol

Can we get PMs, eh?

I'll do my best and try to write up reviews this weekend. I promise.

The rounds with three albums turned out to be too cumbersome for me to fit in my very limited time available.

Those are the two albums I considered before making my choice.

This is what Goat of A Thousand Young actually suggested.

Exact same thing here. I thought of both of them, being UG Metal forum favorites I just figured I would throw a curve ball instead, give people something they haven't heard.
