Interesting Lagato Excerisises

Was looking at these licks http://www.insaneguitar.com/mc/legato.html

And they're okay, I mean they prove to me that I CAN actually play legato at a basic level but they're not very interesting to play. Anyone know any fun legato exercises? Preferable with some kind of backing?

But I don't know how to compose legato runs =(

Oh and also, I seem to have problems with moving fingers too far away? Is it just a case of slowing right down and not moving fingers as far away.

Muck about..

Seriously, try playing something random with legato. We don't know what your definition of "fun legato exercises" are, so the best thing is to make your own.

But to share something useful aswell. Personally i use 3 note per string scales aswell as licks from songs for my legato playing practice.

The 3nps scales i use for a couple of things:
a) I practice my scales.
b) I practice scale sequences. (Cause lets be honest, just playing a scale up and down is boring and not very good sounding. Playing it in some kind of sequence is more fun, and it can sound cool aswell)
c) Warming up.

Then as said, learn licks from songs you like that utilize legato. If their difficult just slow them down until you can play them easily and work from there.

The important thing really is when you've stopped fretting a note: the key is not to lift your finger but just to relax it. Remember: the opposite of fretting isn't lifting, the opposite of fretting is not fretting.

You'll need to go really slowly to start getting this idea in to your playing and it's not an easy thing to do but if you work on it for a good 20-30 minutes a day practicing this way you'll see results soon enough.

Then what about fretting frets behind the closest finger to the bridge, surely they have to be lifted away?

Nope, just relax your fingers, they really don't need to be lifted at all. Watch this:

So in reality the proper starting place for the fingers is floating around 1/2cm above the strings? Not resting on them? So by relaxing the finger it clears the string on it's own?

Yes and no. For most fingers, that's right. But you also want to be resting your index finger on the strings to mute them, in some instances anyways. Ideally, you want to mute all the strings higher than the one you're playing on as well as the one above the one you're playing on. So if you're playing on the D string, you should ideally be muting the A, G, B, and high e strings with the index finger of your left hand. But if you're not using left hand muting, then all your fingers should start slightly above the strings. You won't always be using left hand muting though. If you have to play something like a Badd11:
Code:
e|-0- B|-0- G|-8- D|-9- A|-9- E|-7-

You won't be using left hand muting as you need the B and high e string to ring open.
