There's a "Big Cat Habitat" near my house and I swear those things will not shut up. You can hear them roaring at 2 am all the way from my driveway.

I am extremely disappointed at the lack of a "Panther" option.

Although I'm gonna go tiger. Because of one reason.

A "panther" is actually a more general term for lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards.

Because the "black panther" i assume you're thinking of is simply a melanistic version of any big cat

No, "panthera" is the genus that includes all the big cats.

Actually they're technically right.

As far as the genus goes, "Panthera" has leopards, lions, tigers, and jaguars.

The black panther is a black cougar, leopard, or jaguar, depending on where you are.

EDIT: goddamnit ninja'd by mosca.

Well not exactly, I don't think people call just any big cats "panthers" now.

The colloquial terminology "panther" is never used to refer to the scientific genus panthera. Ever. Panther refers to puma's and mountain lions and such.

Doubtful, but technically you guys are right .

I actually was unaware that black panthers could be cougars or jaguars, I always thought it was just leopards.

"panther" describes a different group (cougar/leopard/jaguar) than "Panthera" (tiger/lion/jaguar/leopard) so no, they aren't technically right about anything

with this reasoning, you'd have a terrible time with a lot of species because their common names describe something completely different

sorry I don't know why I'm getting so angry about this
