Guitar to PC

Hey there.

This is probably a much discussed topic, but I couldn't find any other topics that explained my situation.

Here's the thing: I bought a cable Jack to USB, a GuitarLink by Alesis.
The problem is that the sound is too distorted. I opened Audacity and the sound sounds like it's already distorted. And if I turn the volume knob on my guitar all the way to 0, I get a fuzzy sound...

Is there any way to fix this? I mean, is it possible to correct this playing around with settings and whatnot, or is buying a proper audio interface the only way to fix it?

Thanks for reading,

Kav

That's your problem right there, you are not going to get a good sound from that no matter what you do, return it if you can and try to save for a decent interface

Guitar straight into your PC? Are you recording cleans only? If so just use a regular instrument cable with a 1/4'' > 1/8'' adapter. But if you're going from an amp or something to your PC it's going to sound like shit regardless unless your amp has the right circuitry for direct.

Go in the windows volume settings and turn down the input volume to 10 or so.

Yep. And also, if you're using Audacity, there's an input volume at the top left-hand part of the window, turn that down. If you were using a line in make sure NOT to plug it into the microphone jack but the direct-in.

Terrible idea.

Read the thread donegan_zealot linked to. It tells you all you need to know about those adapters, as well as everything you need to know about proper interfaces.

Good article, but you can get decent results with an adapter. Obviously a proper interface will be better though.

I used to have one and if you use distortion it's pretty damn hard to get anything near mildly sastisfying
