I like how you guys are all naming rock and metal artists.

The Dies Irae reprisal from Verdi's Requiem is the heaviest piece of music I've ever heard in my life. A full, 200+ person choir and orchestra shook the concert hall to the foundation. I literally could feel pressure on my chest as they hit the final chords and I don't know that anyone in the audience was dry eyed by the end.

If you want an overall "heaviest piece ever", I'd list the Requiem as a contender. I don't know that any puny 4/5-piece band would even make the top twenty.

Precisely what I addressed in my post on the first page. In my opinion, my experience of Verdi's Requiem tops out all the types of heaviness that I referenced.

I stopped searching for "the heaviest of za heaviest" and just focused on finding a happy medium for my particular tastes: vocal performance, heaviness (to a degree), song writing + song structure, and a special certain something that is both unique and universal to the Metal community.

For me, right now, Lamb of God is my favorite post 2000s metal band. I also really like JFAC and Whitechaple's latest efforts. Good stuff. Meshuggah's last CD was kinda meh.

Heaviest song I've heard thus far is probably Meshuggah's "Bleed".

For me, it's just how they come in the song, all guns blazing.

I've heard tons of black metal but those are more on the atmospheric side than heavy side, and as far as death metal goes, it's heavy and brutal, but I've heard many songs that start off with a clean/soft and eerie guitar line before they build it up to something heavy. Which is why "Bleed" gets my vote. Starts off with furious intensity and maintains it throughout the entire song.

I consider Burzum the heaviest ever. The lead singer (the whole band is just him on every instrument: drums, guitar, vocals, etc) is the heaviest rocker that i know about. He doesnt just write about death and crap in songs he's actually done some of that crazy stuff (murdered somebody, burned churches, and a couple of other crazy plots). I never really listened to Burzum that much so I dont know if the music has the agressivness or whatever your looking for but you should at least look Burzum up...
