I was bouncing around the idea of inviting the UG metal forum to an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel that is already registered with freenode. I know we have used mumu player and sometimes facebook to chat (we had that ridiculous UG chat with meebo for a little while and it fell through). Facebook can be a hassle because of having to add a friend just to chat with them and at times people from your daily life will conflict with your UG virtual life and so on and so forth (for some people this isn't the case... but I am just putting that out there). Mumu player is a really awesome idea but only a few people can get on at a time and mumu is extremely glitchy. Facebook groups (as well as Google+ groups) are ok but... as I said before the interface is annoying.

I suggest an alternative way to chat so that you can keep your UG name and stay anonymous if you prefer and we can all get on the same channel at once without any drawbacks. The main reason I prefer IRC chat is because of the lightweight and simple design along with giving everyone a chance to get on there without some initial conditions.

There many ways to chat on the IRC metal channel. One way is to go to the webchat site and sign in (just your username/nickname and a captcha and what channel you want to get in)


Another way is to use a terminal/command prompt application to chat (which is what I prefer) so that you don't have to use your browser for everything.. you can separate chatting and browsing.


If you want to use irssi you can and and chat away with your unregistered or registered name (whichever your prefer... some channels require that you register with freenode which is easy enough). I see this as a simple and easy way for everyone to discuss things as we have in the metal forum


This is just a concept I came up with recently... feel free to discuss or ask questions and let me know what you think.

rgedit: Also, we don't have to only use freenode.net for a metal channel... there are alot of other servers and choices...



This is the new IRC Channel we are using.. you can continue to use #ugmetalforum if you want to... but most of the IRC channel regulars will migrate to #hessianharem

actually... you can get on using just about anything really. Some people use IRC from their phones or whatever. Which is why I am suggesting it.

mIRC IS the easiest way. If anyone is interested you can download it here

Once you download it, every time you open it up it will say that you have so many days of a free trial. But even after the trial is over you can still use it. After your free "trial" is over, when you open the program it will prompt you to either "register" or "continue" and the continue button will be locked. Wait a few seconds and it will unlock. So it can be used indefinitely for free.

To find the server:
1. Open mIRC
2. An "mIRC options" window should pop up after dealing with registration prompt.
3. On the left hand corner, a drop-down menu should be displayed. The top option is "Connect." Open the options underneath, and click on "Servers"
4. Scroll down the list of servers. They should be in alphabetical order. Find the server "freenode." click on it. Random server should appear under it.
5. Double click "random server" under "freenode"
6.Type in a nickname and click "connect"
7. Once connected, a window should pop up labeled "mIRC favorites." In the very top bar that says: "enter a channel name and click join" type in #ugmetalforum
8. You should now be on the metal channel!

I can submit possibly more detailed instructions upon request. I kinda threw this together rather quickly.

I think its safe to assume that the natives are...Not people. They constantly log on and off because I guess eventually they ping out and are automatically signed back in.
