If your on a a tight budget I agree with Bee Reaper is the best bang for buck feature wise. If you need some vsti instruments though check out Acoustica's Mixcraft 5 also very reasonably priced. Freeware Krystal is good quite limited but it gets the job done and its very easy to use.

This. Relatively newbie in the recording software world but I really do like it. You can get a free version with a few limitations.

This. There is loads of information there that answers this very question and tells you what equipment you'll need to use it properly.
