Well there's no substitute for experience. We can suggest amps, but really you've got to try them out yourself and see if you like them.

The XXL is a good choice, but make sure you look for a Randall RH200. I had one for a while, and it sounded massive, especially considering that it was only 150$. It was awesome on the overdrive channel, not much of a clean sound, but maybe, that drive tone was awesome. It sounds a little different than the RG series, a little less fizzy and more chunky. I liked mine alot

But it's a good idea, though.
Vetta HD's rarer and more limited anyway. The Vetta II is both slightly more common and actually a better head. There's also the HD147, which is a stripped-down Vetta made specifically for metal (no twin-amp mode, fewer 'classic' style amp models, more aggressive compressor and noise gate, smoother Wah and more headroom). You can find 'em both on eBay fairly cheaply.

You can get a firm ware update for the Vetta to make it the vetta II, my friend has done this.
Don't forget the Flextone II HD another really good head for cheap.

There's a bit ore tot he Vetta II than simply a firmware update. Although you can update the tones of the Vetta to match the Vetta II, the actual hardware of the Vetta II was a little better made.

Ah I see. I just know he had this done by L6. He bought the vetta used and then it broke a little while later. line 6 told him to ship it to them for repairs. They didn't charge him a dime to repair it.

Line 6 deff has good customer service. I neede a few replace ment parts for my Spider Valve, and they sent them for free to me. Not many companys will do that these days

You will never get that punch in the face kind of a sound with a solid state I'm afraid. Look out for a used Black Star HT stage 100 head or something like that. It's definatly worth it.

Yup, another reason I think they're a worthwhile option even though some of their products sound terrible. I had to get my HD147 and FBV repaired and I told them I didn't like the newer buttons/expression pedal/LEDs they had begun using, so they dug out their last few older replacements for me. Other than postage, didn't charge me a penny. And they threw in a sturdier CAT-5/6 cable.

So long as you're not a die-hard valve fan, Line 6 can be fantastic.

See if you can find a Line 6 Flextone II head. They are normally really cheap $150-$200 USD. They sound really nice also.
